Do you think Ward will remain a villain this season? If so, then do you see him being redeemed in the future and possibly rejoining the team?
Hmmm Wow. I’ve never had an Ask to this account before. I guess I will answer it but if any followers like/don’t like me doing this let me know.
Short answer is Yes, of course. He was practically twirling his mustache at the end of Season Two. I do think he’s thrown his lot in with the villians mostly due to the fact that he knows there is no place in his Shield family now for him (Sweet Simmons tried to kill him after all! AND he tortured Bobbi and tried to kill May and Hunter and really almost everyone at some point.) and he is probably super pissed and angry at his new lady love being killed (and by himself no less) and wants to lash out at the team for their role in it. Blaming himself at all would be rather crippling so I can see himself being in super denial for some time to come.
Can Ward be redeemed?
I think Ward is a very Spike from Buffy type character. In season one his back story revealed he was sort of the Will the Bloody Awful poet guy…a good guy who when pushed another way by a bad influence ended up thriving and being almost confused when called called on it. He did the best he could at the task at hand and loved showing how much he could do. Show what he was worth to someone.
Season Two Ward has him in love with Skye in a rather creepy way (much like Spike was with Buffy) and trying to show his love by helping her out in ways she can’t be sure she trusts.
So Ward can be redeemed like Spike, right?
Ward had vaguely threatened to rape Skye at one point. How do you even come back from that?! And now he’s going to lead an evil organization opposed to Skye’s and Shield’s interests?
Spike was redeemed after earning Buffy’s trust, showing her he was always on her side, and basically going on a huge set of trials that earned him back his soul. He set out to be a man like he wanted Buffy to deserve.
For Ward to do that he would have to actually have a dramatic change of heart and decide to destroy Hydra from the inside and in a dramatic sacrifice be rendered memoryless, and upon hearing the things he’s been up to be properly horrified and try to atone for them.
If Ward has no memories I could see the team not being able to hold his past against him as much and softening to him as he redeems himself and they in turn get to reshape Grant Ward into who he might have been if Garret didn’t snag him first.
Same if evil ward clones an innocent version of himself or they end up with some sort of timey-whiney past Ward. Comic book plot! Am I RIGHT?!
Long story short, Ward is a bad guy now. Maybe he’ll have a change of heart in the future but he’ll already be in even worse harder to forgive territory. Not to say it’s impossible but Ward or his counterpart would need to get acceptance from the entire team, a momentous and nearly impossible thing.
Neary impossible because of comic books and not like memory alterning or magic mind whamming or shape shifting hasn’t happened before. Comics!
