La Petite Mort

La Petite has been evoking bloody evil erotic incantations for years as a producer and a performer.  She specializes in performance art and dabbles in many other forms such as strip tease, as a songstress and a violinist.  She’s been dubbed Seattle’s Queen of Gorelesque and she currently produces two show runs: Dark Cabaret & Morbid Curiositease. 

Here's what she had to say about this city.

What is your favorite meal around Seattle?

I have two favorites.  Lottie’s in Columbia City has great food and cocktails.  I’m a fan of the pulled pork. My other fav is Bitterroot in Ballard.  Everything is so good but if I had to choose I’d say the ribs.  I never would have discovered these joints if it wasn't for performing.  The band gets gigs frequently in those neighborhoods. I can easily be bribed to leave the house with BBQ.

Where would you take a friend who is visiting Seattle for the first time?

I love to support live entertainment so there is always either a variety/burlesque show or live music somewhere in the mix.  A lot of times we drag them along to one of our shows. We have a really thriving music culture so places like Easy Street are a must.  Pike place market is sort of a given.  It’s the one touristy thing I really enjoy.

You left Seattle for a while, what’s the first place you go to when you're back?

Full Tilt for pinball, cider and Ice Cream.  It’s many of my favorite things all in one place. Can you tell I’m ruled by food?

What's your go to park?

I love Lincoln Park. The beach is beautiful and the trail along the water is great for long-boarding.  I’m not very outdoorsy but it’s always beautiful there whether it’s sunny or raining.

What do you do on a rainy day?

I’m really a homebody.  Although we throw these events that are massive parties or artsy burlesque shows, my favorite place is home and I’m not much of a partier.  I love watching movies, reading and there’s always costuming to work on.  I have a family so rainy days are a great time to catch the littles up on movies I watched as a kid.

My favorite activity in Seattle is_________?

Antiquing!  I pretty much check out the antique stores everywhere I go but it’s fun to find what’s practically in your backyard.  I’ll tag along on tour for a leg and see antique shops around the country.  There’s only been a few that can compare to the goodies here though.  I love to collect rustic Victorian items and oddities.

Savor Seattle

Whether you are visiting Seattle or you've been here for a while, Savor Seattle Tours is one of the must try experiences in this area. Angela Shen founded the company after moving to the area from Chicago and falling in love with all the fresh produce Pike Place Market had to offer. 

Being unemployed at the time, She couldn't bear the thought of spending a minimum of $100 for her and her husband to try all the great restaurants around Seattle. So Savor Seattle was born based on the idea that for the same amount you spend at one restaurant why not visit 6-9 different places with small tastes along the way? 

Here's what she had to say about Seattle. 

What are some under the radar dishes or food spots in Seattle?

I am absolutely in love with Park Soon’s newest restaurant, Tray Kitchen. The format of the dining experience is modeled loosely behind the idea of dim sum, where dishes are brought around on trays where guests are able to select from. Not only are the flavor combinations surprising and prepared with exquisite precision, the style of service is inspiring. It fuels discovery and pushes diners outside of their comfort zones.

I also love the roasted mushroom and truffle cheese pizza at Serious Pie. Everyone knows pizza…but this will revolutionize your ideas about what pizza is and what it should be from here on out!

And last but not least, one of my go to desserts is the White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake from the Confectional. And when Fall rolls around, their Pumpkin Cheesecake has me on my knees all the way through Christmas. It has ruined me for life. What’s the point of eating regular pumpkin pie when you can have pumpkin cheesecake instead?

You left Seattle for a while, what's the first place you go to?

After a long trip away from Seattle, what I can’t help thinking about is Tom Douglas’s coconut cream pie. To me, nothing says Seattle more than that pie. Sure, Seattle is synonymous with coffee. But I can’t stomach all that much coffee anyways. But that pie? Oh man, I could eat it for DAYS.

What's the best thing you ate in 2014?

At The Whale Wins, they have this amazing roasted carrot and fennel salad with harissa and yogurt. A vegetarian dish that changed my life.

What's your favorite activity in Seattle?

Other than eating, my 2nd favorite activity in Seattle is going on a ferry to one of the islands (e.g. Whidbey, San Juan Islands). There is something magical about seeing Seattle from the water. It is a quintessential Seattle experience.

The food scene in Seattle is _________________. 

Rockin’! We are so blessed to have so many talented chefs that are “all in” and putting everything on the line for their crafts. It can be so powerful. Sometimes you can taste their vulnerabilities, hopes, and aspirations right there on the plate.

Creating Events on Attendible

In the past year, we have been heads down on perfecting the way event organizers and venues use Attendible to create events. After all, we are a community based calendar and listening to our user’s feedback is one of our top priorities. Setting up your calendar on www.attendible.com is super easy. I will take you through the basic steps here:

1-Sign up on Attendible: the first step requires you to sign up on our website. You can either sign up as a user or you can sign up using your business’s name. After signing up, we recommend you edit your profile page.

2- Edit your profile/calendar: This  page will allow you to input all the info about your business. We recommend you use a photo that reflects the vibe of what you do, because that’s the first thing the user will see on Attendible. Providing a small description of what you do is also a great way to make users understand your business. You have the option of sharing your social media profiles like Facebook, Twitter and you can also share your Yelp page.

3- Start creating events: After you have set up your profile, you can start creating events.

Things to keep in mind while creating events: you have to select a category for your event. This will help our system group your event under different interests, like Performing Arts, or Meals & Drinks. Hashtags work the same way but are optional and limited to 3 per event.You can pick a photo from your website’s url or upload a new one. Keep in mind that the image has to be a max. of 1MB. Describe what the event is about, sometime an image and a title are not enough. You also have the option of adding many sessions and dates.

PS: Don’t forget to add a ticket URL and Youtube Url, people love watching videos!

Ok you have set up a profile and created an event, what does that mean?

Attendible in 2013

2013 has been an awesome year for attendible.The website is now an open social calendar, which means anyone can create a profile and start publishing events.

Events now trend based on the likes they receive from the community, this is a great opportunity for small businesses to share the word about what they are up to.

We have always been an advocate for local, now you can follow your favorite profiles, whether it's a local artist that you like or a local music venue that you visit every saturday night. We launched our weekly digest to keep you in the loop of what's happening and many small features that have impacted the use of our product one way or another.

Here comes the circus!

“SANCA smells like hope” A student at SANCA 

Earlier this week, I paid a visit to SANCA (School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts) in Georgetown after being blown away by their Falling Upward Show, A performance of different circus arts set against the backdrop of The Great Depression. I didn’t know what to expect from the show, but what I saw was a great production and great performances all curated and directed by the staff and teachers working at SANCA

The founders, Jo and Chuck, saw a need for a place where kids can have the chance to learn a skill while having fun in a friendly and non-competitive environment and thus SANCA was born. It has been almost 9 years and SANCA has grown to be the largest circus school in the USA with over 1,000 students and more than 250 different classes.

“ SANCA is truly for everyone, all ages and all people,” said Dwight, the executive director of SANCA. “ We celebrate individuality and Seattle has been the perfect environment for that”

SANCA has a wide variety of classes from hula-hoops, unicycle, juggling all the way to tight wire, and flying trapeze. In addition to their classes, they produce around 4 shows a year, and are part of the Georgetown Art Attack where they have an artist on display and open Flying Trapeze for everyone.

Their upcoming show “IMPulse” is inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s story “The Imp of the Perverse” and it showcases 6 different artists toying around with their urges and impulses to do exactly the wrong things in different situations for the mere fact that you can actually do it. When I asked Dwight to describe SANCA in one word he said, “SANCA is joy.”

Through the Lens of Christopher Nelson

When we say the name Christopher Nelson it might not ring a bell, but most of you know him through his photos. He has lived in Seattle for the past 15 years, during which he became “The Photographer” for Seattle’s best events, from Bumbershoot at Seattle Center all the way to Sasquatch at the Gorge. He moved to Seattle because he saw in it a place where the people and the state appreciated and supported the arts, and that’s where his photography journey started. He grabbed his camera everywhere he went, even to his work when he was a production assistant for Bumbershoot.

Bumbershoot holds a special place in his heart, since it was that festival that paved his way into event photography. After Bumbershoot, he began shooting photos for the Family 4th fireworks show at Gasworks, Sasquatch Music Festival, Paramount Theatre, The Showbox, and The Triple Door, just to name a few.

His photos speak for him; In the camera he found a medium where he can express himself and narrate what his eyes are seeing. While some people use the pen, Christopher uses his lens to capture the uniqueness of the things he's shooting.The first thing that we noticed in his photography was how well he was able to capture the vibe in the events he went to. We could feel the energy coming from the people in the photos to us, making us feel as if we were there cheering with the fans. While some photographers focus on the stage and who’s playing, Christopher’s camera was aimed towards the audience and their reaction. “The crowd is what makes a concert great,” he said. “Aiming the camera towards them is as important as aiming it towards the artist on the stage.” 

We asked Chris a couple of questions over lunch at Pike Place:

Q. What makes Seattle’s music scene so unique?

Hands down, the people!  It is their support and love for the arts in general that makes Seattle what it is today. There is also an amazing community of local artists and a very diverse music scene. The support of the state has also a huge impact; the City of Seattle has placed a lot of importance on the arts and supported its artists.

Q. What is your favorite spot in Seattle?

I would have to say Golden Gardens.  I just love going there, love the fire pits & the sunset. Also, I love Seattle Center. So much goes on there. It’s a place where different cultures are embraced and a lot of things happen in the same spot, from the skaters’ park to EMP and the Space Needle.

  Q. What are some tips you want to give to people who are into concert photography?

 The first tip is respect the people that are around you, especially if you are taking photos in events. Be respectful to their space. They came to enjoy a show, try not to obstruct their view.

Avoid using a flash. It can be distracting to the artist/audience and can take away from the ambiance of the photo.

Buy the camera that you will use, not the one that you think you need.

Take as many shots as you can from different angles. Experiment. Sometimes the best photos are not the ones you intentionally planned.

Q. What is the best thing about Seattle’s summer?

Seattle is amazing in the summer. People just go out and worship the sun. And I think that is what makes Seattle so special; the winter is a time where people reflect on their work and ideas, and it is in the summer that they go out and share them.
