addicted to you challenge → one impression: then & now
I’ve watched Lo become sober. I’ve watched Lily curb a relentless addiction. (I’m proud of you, sis.) I’ve watched Rose blaze her own trail and put fire to stereotypes. I’ve watched Connor fall in love. With more than just himself. I’ve watched Ryke Meadows unclip his shackles and rise again. And me. I’ve discovered w h o I a m .

“I can just tell everyone y o u ’ r e m y g i r l ,and they’ll probably back off.” “Your girl?” My brows jump. He licks his lips and actually laughs into a small smile. “It’s ambiguous. Not a girlfriend, but not just a friend. I don’t own you or anything. It just lies somewhere between those two.” My shoulders loosen a little as I contemplate this. “It reminds me of the movie.” I have to bite my tongue to keep from smiling. My Girl. A movie about best friends. “What movie?” he asks. “My Girl …you’ve never seen it?” He shakes his head. And then he asks, “Are you okay with this? I can try to think of something else if you’re not.” I contemplate it a little more. “So if someone asks you about me, you’ll say to them…?” “She’s my girl.” He says it with sincerity and threat, like don’t mess with her. He takes a hand off the steering wheel and catches my gaze once. “Yeah?” My arms heat, liking my girl more than I thought I would. Maybe because it’s from him.“Yeah,” I say, licking my lips.

Kinney Hale Kinney tells me, “I’m scared of nothin’ in the world.” For being three, she says this very seriously—to the point where I think I believe her. I try to recall any frightened Kinney moments, but most are just content Kinney moments.
Tom Cobalt Lo holds up two fingers. “Second of all, you’re not fake-drowning to get the attention of someone.” Tom takes a peek at the lifeguard stand. “What if he’s really cute?”
Winona Meadows Winona shouts something that sounds like I’m just a land crab! She dubbed herself the Mightiest Land Crab in All the Land this morning. She bit Ryke’s arm when he picked her up, and then she pinched his cheek. “My crab claws!” she told him.

I’ll never forget being by Rose’s side during the labor. Holding her hand. How Ryke and Connor were with us. I’ll never forget how much we all cared. We picked out the middle name B r i a r because we wanted to honor Rose—she cried the day we told her, but not as much as we cry now. * * * “ V a d a L a u r e n A b b e y ,” he tells me the name. “Vada for—” “My Girl,” I finish. The lead character of that 90s film is named Vada. Garrison reblogs a lot of My Girl gifs and makes them for Willow, but both Lo and I first saw that movie when we were about eight or nine. It fits them better than all of my suggestions, even Hermione. “And Lauren, as in—” “Me,” he finishes this time. My eyes well. “Lo.” * * * “Keller for a boy,” he breathes. “ K i n n e y for a girl.” I smile wider into my tears. Julian Keller and Laura Kinney from X-Men comics. Hellion and X-23. His two favorite characters in all of Marvel. Characters that I love immensely out of his love for them. Why we didn’t think of these names for our third baby—maybe because we knew these characters are the most precious to us. And our story wasn’t closed yet. One more. * * * “Audrey,” I say the name I’ve had picked out for years. After Audrey Hepburn. Tears fall again. I’m a tsunami today. More water than rage. Connor pulls his chair close and sits beside me. “A u d r e y V i r g i n i a C o b a l t .” After Virginia Woolf..

Memories will flood behind us, the lake house no longer filled to the brim. As quiet as the moment we first walked in—and we’ll sit on this hill. Feeling the stillness that exists. And then we end—we end where we started. Just us. All six of us.
