“ are you a watcher or a player ? ”

From what Jess gathered, it was a regular night at this underground vampire bar. There were patrons to drink from, dancers- the place looked like something straight out of a hit HBO show about vampires. The thing was, he couldn’t be surrounded by humans when he felt this way. There were some, of course, but this was easier than a human bar.  The arena he was staring down into, was the one where vampires who wanted to prove their strength would go down to fight. Winner take all- whatever the players had decided was on the table. Some messed up individuals would even bet their human companions. Those were the vampires that were so far gone, Jess wasn’t sure how they got any humans to agree to come along with them. IT was all part of it, though. “Just watching. I’m not that desperate.” He answered her, as he leans onto the railing that surrounded the deck above the arena. “You?”

@1mperium's eyes are cold and dark, but vincent finds he has no desire to run or divert his gaze. he has never been easily intimidated, even in life, even when confronted with the worst of humanity during his mission. vincent doesn't look like much of a priest now; he is not wearing his cassock or his collar and his rosary is safely tucked underneath the sleeve of his simple blue shirt, wrapped around his wrist and forearm. but maybe the knowledge is enough. he wonders if it can be smelled on him, even from the other side of a small tea house in beirut.

he makes sure to thank the man who brings him tea, arabic coming to his lips naturally. he knows he cannot drink it, yet the smell of cardamom is a very human comfort vincent still clings to. with a pang of sadness, he realizes the sweet man has also brought a plate with some sfouf and knafeh. he almost rushes to his feet to have him bring it back, not wishing to offend him with his refusal to eat, instead he inclines his head toward giulio. the vampire is not sitting at the same table, preferring to keep a comfortable and detached distance, perhaps, but vincent has no need to raise his voice to be heard clearly.

'' hunger — i have found i can resist it even for long periods of time. but this is what pains me the most. does it sound strange to you? ''

“ perhaps i don’t say it enough, but… i’d like you to know that i’m always here, if you ever wanted to talk. ”

Even in his ‘alive’ years, the years before the bloodshed, before he learned to control it; the bloodlust- he hadn’t really had anyone be there before. It was always a question that rang in his mind: ‘why’d she decide to ‘save’ him? To make him this thing, this beast. Barbara was too much of a free spirit to tack herself down to wherever it was he was holed up, but they met every now and then. They’d spend a few weeks, months, or even years together depending on how each of them was doing- but there always came a time when he’d wake up to a note, that she’d gone on some new grand adventure. At first, it had bothered him. When she left, he was alone. Then again, maybe she understood that he needed to be like that sometimes. This new life one with aplenty moments of vast adjustment.  “I guess I kind of thought you would be.” Jess admitted, his hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie as his head hung slightly down. “I just didn’t want to become this burden. You know.. You create me, and then I’m just this mess. How fun is that?” Jess didn’t blame her for the bouts of misery he endured, though. Most of it was his own doing. His inability to be close to anyone had existed long before he’d been saved.

There was a question that plagued his mind, but he never dared to ask it- why’d she save him? Why’d she given him the same fate as her? She’d been open enough about what happened to her the night she was turned early on in his afterlife; probably in an attempt to get him to stop freaking out. A way to keep him in touch with some form of humanity so he didn’t completely go off the rails as so many did.

Jess thinks about the night he was turned; how it still fucked him up, too. How living a life as a vampire was really painful for the first few decades, as you watch everything your human self was familiar with rot, die, and decay. There were good parts, though, and he was doing better at trying to focus on them. 

“Maybe it doesn’t.” He voiced, his words coming out low. “We’re frozen in time. Maybe our wounds never really heal. But maybe we learn to live with it all. Find a way to-“ he paused, looking up at the sky, each star lighting up in ways his human eyes could of never processed. “To make room for the good right beside the bad.”

It was only a matter of time before he got caught- he’d been following her since their encounter; the question was still ringing in his head: Why hadn’t she tried to kill him? Supposedly, she was a hunter, and he was the very thing she trained to hunt. So why leave him be? Had she been trailing him, and if so, for how long? It hadn’t escaped his mind that she might be aware of his presence in the days that followed. The truth, was that he hadn’t been made aware of such humans, and he intended to learn what exactly it was that drew her to this life. Was she just human? Did she possess some ability he’d never heard of?  In the grand scheme of things, Jess was a new vampire. There was so much he still had to learn about this life, and it wasn’t like he had someone mentoring him. 

“Why didn’t you kill me?” Jess questioned, maintaining a bit of distance between them. It wasn’t that he was afraid; more that he didn’t want her to perceive him as an active threat.

How long had it been since he’d seen her last? Years, probably. Time didn’t mean anything to him anymore. Jess can recall the first time he met her, though. It was a setting much like this, just after he had been turned, and left to figure it out on his own.  That night, along with a handful of others, was one of the few that would live in the back of his mind. It stayed vivid, and maybe that was because it was all so new. 

“We’ve got to stop running into each other like this.”
