D&AD09: The Best Advertising and Design in the World // Taschen
As a part of the exhibition project briefing we have to create an advertising poster for our chosen artist exhibition. I found this useful book full of advertising information and posters that helped a lot in idea generating.
Jeep: Husky/Camel, Bushman/Eskimo, Goat/Crocodile // Client: Chrysler Korea // Designers: Willeon Leong, Gary Lim, MUN // page. 31
These three poster designs were created for the company ‘Jeep’ to show off the characteristics of the vehicles without even showing a vehicle itself. Using two very different animals creates a juxtaposition within the posters and shows off that these cars are used for all terrain, for example, the wolf representing the icy tundra and opposite is the camel showing off the dessert climate. Same goes for the two men, the bushman and the eskimo. Alternatively the goat and alligator show off two different terrains as opposed to the other posters, the goat represents rocky terrain and the alligator represents swampy terrain.
Tide: Forget the Cheese (yellow) / Forget the Ketchup (red) / Forget the Soy Sauce (brown) // Client: Procter & Gamble // Designer: Aaron Padin // page. 44
These three poster are evidently different from the previous posters, representing the American washing brand; Tide. These poster use humour and bright colours to attract attention, and it’s very effective. Each one is similar but different from one another using a comedic story and the “sauce” as a background representing the stains that the washing tablets can combat. I really enjoy these posters as a set because it shows how effective a humorous trait can have on a poster.
Lurpak: Crust / Ping / Fear Not // Client: Lurpak // Designer: Karen Jane // page. 60
Karen Jane’s posters are representing the comedic side of cooking, making jokes at the people who worry about cooking (in the Fear Not poster) and the frustration of the “ping” noise that a standard microwave chimes. These posters also show the ways Lurpak butter can be used within cooking. I really like the layered type over the photograph behind as it gives the poster a sense of importance, using large type. This is an aspect I want to use in my own poster designs.
