Aud A2 concept.
Audi Takes on BMW at Frankfurt…
….or should that be the other way around?
The big motor shows are an opportunity for automakers to showcase why they are the top dog and competition amongst the German automakers is particularly fierce at Frankfurt.
Both Audi and BMW unveiled 100% electric models at Frankfurt. Audi’s all-electric A2 concept has been pitted against BMW’s electric i3, due for release in 2013. So how do they compare?
The original A2 was a compact MPV made between 1999 and 2005. Like the A2 Concept it too was made of lightweight carbon fibre but unlike the A2 Concept it wasn’t powered solely by an electric powertrain (which incidentally is nestled under the floor for a roomier cabin all round!). The all electric Audi offers a range of 124 miles, with the battery taking just four hours for a full charge. A pure-electric and plug-in version are in the pipeline.
Similar to size to the Volkswagen Polo the BMW i3, like the A2, houses its battery under the floor. The BMW i3 is powered by a 125kW electric motor and promises a 100 mile range and a six-hour recharging time. An i3 range-extender version is likely to be made available to increase the cars electric range.
Do you like what Audi offers or what BMW are presenting?
