Cultural criticism, what we strive for, is grounded in foundational leftist thinking. Over the course of ten years, we've learned that many people who would benefit from access to primary sources put them off; some dismiss them outright.

We've engaged in a project to make foundational leftist texts available by streaming audio as a tool for education. Here's what you'll need:

This is a prototype with 5 GB of audio available as independent streams anywhere you can access the web. In fact, with Palm and Android, clients are available to playback streams anywhere you have 3G access; for iOS, a client is available that works if you have internet access through wifi.

If the prototype is successful (based on usage statistics and feedback), we'll create a permanent instance. With your feedback, we believe this can be an outstanding resource.

There are three steps after login: browse, add to the playlist (using the + buttons), and then pressing the play button above the playlist.

We really are reliant on feedback.

Audibleleft Accumulating Cost - What next?

Well, a lot of encouraging signs in response to the audibleleft server. But it looks like it went unused for about six days, and then someone listened to some Rousseau in the last day or so. The cost for the server is accumulating, so depending on feedback, I may be putting an end to the prototype. I'm still eager to work with others to fund a dedicated server, but I can also try to raise the funds on my own if it comes to it and the feedback is positive. Feedback?

There has been very little explicit feedback on the audibleleft prototype; however, I've clearly found the discourse community for me: The substantive, meaningful support is implicit in the reblogs, in a few fleeting signs that people have tested it out, and the distinct lack of trolls and malevolent commentary.

Texts: I know my political alignment, to a degree. I'm trying to remain unbiased and commit to foundational texts. However, if you mine audio that you feel belongs, I'll provide you catalog rights and an upload account.

I hope my enthusiasm is shared. The prototype is a menial $.06 cents an hour, so I can fund the experiment for a while. But the quicker people come together to find a sustainable solution, the better.
