Michael McKinnon is one of those determined artists who started off DJing by using multiple tape decks. He started off by making mixtapes for his older brother. Michael said:
"I just thought that cutting tracks was cool as penguin poop. Turns out, I was totally right."
In 1997, Michael was drawn into the rave scene:
"The music had a mystique that drew me like a moth to the flame"
Michael is also known as Soulfix and 50% of the DJ/Production duo Dirty Politics.
I have had the opportunity to see Soulfix play out a few times and it has always been a great time! Flawless mixing and an amazing raw energy that attracts all kinds of people to the dance floor.
A great example is of VEMF 2010. Soulfix had earned himself a prime spot on the mainstage of this two day music festival. Three thousand people from all walks of life going wild to his beats.
Something that shocked me was being told Michael started making his own beats in 2008! His first release was a remix for Nu-Industry Recordings. He has major influences such as Lazy Rich, Paul Anthony and Dirty Politics other half, Nicky Distraktion.
In 2009 Michael joined forces with Nicky Distraktion and created Dirty Politics. The two have created many wonderful tracks that have been topping charts everywhere.
Their recent track "Slipsteam" done with Paul Anthony quickly climbed the electro charts on beatport. This gritty electro track fuses itself with some haunting melodies and has become one of my personal favorites. Several people have been raving about it and I constantly hear of it being a hit on the dancefloor.
In 2009 Audio Planet was formed:
"Audio Planet was started in March of 2009, our first release was Dirty Politics & Decibel Brothers - Extra Terrestrial Beings that featured Remixes from Vancouver Island's RUDDER, and Udgata Anagh, a young progressive house kid form India. The original mix, and the progressive mix, battled back and forth for the #1 spot on Dancerecords.com for nearly 2 weeks, while the RUDDER remix sat alone as #1 on the dancerecords.com breaks charts for nearly as long. A great debut that really got he ball rolling for us"
Michael is also busy throwing shows featuring the hottest talent Vancouver Island and the rest of Canada has to offer. You can see him play as Dirty Politics the first Friday of every month at Sunset Room in Victoria, BC.
Expect more releases from Soulfix/Dirty Politics soon! Remixes for Hirshee and Marzetti and original releases with Paul Anthony, Southpaw, and Cityof9s.
