Jim Hawkins finds himself with a knife through his shoulder courtesy of Israel Hands who in this chapter sleeps with the fishes. A great bit of description and a fascinating way to mark time, Stevenson shows the days progression with the setting of the sun and the rise of the moon, with an elegance that makes the observation exciting, and pivotal to the story. 

Edging closer to the end of this campaign to tell this story. I am filled with joy having come so far. 

The sound editing and presentation I feel has grown significantly and the story telling I feel has sharpened as well. 

A wonderful project and a great chapter. Enjoy

Chapter 18, End of the First Day of Fighting

This is a very powerful moment of the story. This is not the first death in the novel, however it is a juxtaposition to the last death in Chapter 15.

Here a servant and seeming non-verbal player in the story dies in honor following orders. In chapter 15, Long John kills another sailor for his disloyalty to the buccaneers.

I believe this story has lasted the test of time, by the way is displays honor and more to the point dishonor. I also believe people draw great lessons on human interaction from this type of work, gleaning etiquette as men of integrity. Strictly because as people we learn by example, and the examples set here offer precise guidelines on how to honor and grieve a fallen soldier.

Perhaps I visit to much to fiction, but people have to learn somewhere. if nothing else, it demonstrates the respect people had for duty two hundred years ago.

Chapter 12, Council Of War

Jim Hawkins informs the Doctor, captain and squire of Long John Silver's intent to mutiny. They begin to hatch a plan to thwart the treacherous crew...

Once again, the power of Stevenson's writing is demonstrated here with his ability to convey a dense amount of information in so short a span of words, while still crafting an engaging story.

Long John Silver's duplicity and nonchalance in talking to the captain and even Jim Hawkins is astounding, when just minutes before, he was planning to send them to meet their maker. A prodigious vilain. His tone never falters in kindness, though you can't doubt his villainy. Mighty writing.  

The narration is tricky with several voices all engaged in conversation. I find creating an expression helps me to hold a character voice, while also creating a specific shape for my mouth for each character. As this is a non-commissioned series, the major challenge is returning after a weeks break. The writing is such, however, that the characters return easily.

A striking point in the story of Treasure Island. Jim Hawkins discovers that Long John Silver and his crew have infiltrated the ship and convinced the majority of the crew to mutiny.

The imagery that stand out in my mind is the gallows Silver describes and the moon rising. 

This novel demonstrates what so many people aspire to achieve in writing. That the story seems effortless. There is not a break in narration even in description which does not serve the plot. It is such a joy to study this book as I am performing the narration.
