Hearing an excellent “Sacred Origins” story from Nate Allen in his talk “Death by 1000 cuts: when Christians hurt other Christians”
Some highlights:
- Christian education gone wrong: building a cycle of hurt and anger in the name of God
- “if you’re a Christian long enough you have issues with the Church”
- the dimensions of Spiritual abuse
- the importance of therapy and recognizing your own hurt
- “we all have demons but mine happen to be Christian”
- the result of spiritual abuse is fear: of God as a perpetrator, hyper vigilance of other Christians, a feeling of being profoundly unsafe
- the importance of getting your emotions out: anger is not a sin, and repression is not forgiveness
- “When you are young and wounded, the decision is taken away from you, and taking back that control as an adult is so important. You have a choice: in what to believe and what to do with that belief”
Those themes are all further expressed in his upcoming album “Hide No Truth” and as yet untitled book. [link]
