Courtesans + Bullet Height – ‘SUBSPECIES TOUR’, Friday 8th December 2017 at Audio, Glasgow
Over recent months my family life has placed unexpected additional burdens on my time which led me to step back from radio and review activities. Lately things began to stabilise leading me to take the opportunity for a trip away to catch up with a favourite band. As it turned out that gig weekend co-incided with two unexpected messages about new releases, one recent, the other imminent. It was great to be able to listen to these (all going according to plan I aim to post reviews very soon), many thanks Pink Narcissus and Playing With Punkarella.
But that's for later, now it's back to the Friday afternoon of 8th December when I set off into a lovely clear winter evening. The radio travel update reported a broken down truck blocking an east-bound lane on the M8 into Edinburgh but as that city was rapidly disappearing in my rear view mirror I was simply thankful that it wouldn't affect me and hoped that the band had already made it to Glasgow after their previous night in Leeds. All went very smoothly until I was approaching Glasgow and heard an update on the radio about an accident on the west-bound M8 that was causing delays; the overhead signs indicated where the delays would affect me so I pulled off at the junction ahead of that and, not being familiar with local roads, aimed to rely on my sat-nav to get me to my destination. Unfortunately the sat-nav simply tried to get me to return to the motorway, but I persevered and ignored the technology! Thankfully I had given myself plenty time to complete the journey and eventually arrived close to the venue in Midland Street next door to the now closed legendary 'Arches'. I parked up and made my way to meet up with my nephew Ewan. He had been most impressed by the Courtesans' set when he saw them earlier in the year at 'Bloodstock' so when I noted that they were to return to Glasgow, near him, I was quick to invite him along. Outside the venue I chatted with Callum who, like me, was toting a Courtesans beanie hat, it turned out that he was from my birth town of Dundee and had managed to get himself a position as tour support/roadie – much as I had enjoyed hauling record decks, Orange amps and speakers to various venues in the Stirling area in the mid 1970s for 'Rebel Rouser', my youthful self would have loved such the opportunity to tour as a roadie for such a wonderful band!!!! After our chat I made my way to the end of the street and 'The Crystal Palace' where I had arranged to meet up with Ewan. He duly arrived having been delayed by the M8 snarl up that I had avoided. We enjoyed a chat catch up over a pizza and then proceeded to make our way next door – the pub had been packed and despite not having any music was rather noisy with voices, so it was good to be able to hear ourselves more easily in the pre-gig venue.
One of the reasons I love venues such as 'Audio' is their size which allows for an intimate experience, a world away from sitting high up in an arena and watching the performance on giant video screens. Like many of the bands that I prefer to see perform live now, Courtesans are always ready to mingle with the audience and it wasn't long before I had been re-acquainted with Agnes, Saffire, Sinead and Vikki. Their clear affinity with their fans was underscored as others entered the venue and were welcomed as long-lost friends. I wonder if this pattern can continue as I suspect that the band will become more successful and consequently be more likely to end up playing bigger venues; if so, such intimacy is bound to become harder to maintain – and I may feel less inclined to attend.
The support for the band during the 'Subspecies' tour was Berlin based duo Bullet Height and their set had me congratulating Courtesans for having been able to secure such an inspiring act to team up with. The duo, Jon Courtney and Sammi Doll, were extremely professional and delivered a memorable set full of diversity, power and emotion. As the set successfully replicated the sound and quality of their recordings, rather than spend more time here describing that set I will direct you towards my review of their album which was in my possession when I left the venue.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to follow Courtesans' musical career since the early days of their Pledgemusic campaign to help get their debut album 1917 released. To use a somewhat hackneyed phrase, they have most definitely “been on a journey”; in my case that has resulted in a number of journeys to catch them playing live around the UK. The journey to Glasgow on 8th December 2018 was the second time that I had seen them play in 'Audio' and the fourth time to meet them in Glasgow. The first of these gigs was in the 'African & Caribbean Centre' in November 2014 – they were impressive then and have steadily improved since. Some songs in the set have remained as a core throughout the intervening years = 'Liberate' & 'Genius'. Over that time newer ones have been included in sets, initially 'Mesmerise' and 'Knowhere' followed by others from the excellent 'Better Safe Than Sober' EP. The next developmental phase has injected gems such as 'Monkey Logic' and 'F.U.B.A.R.'. The latter track, whilst being very impressive, is most definitely not an homage to the Stirling night club of the same name, but if you know the derivation of the mnemonic then I'm sure that you will have a clear idea as to what the song is about!
IMHO the live performances by Agnes, Saffire, Sinead and Vikki continue to get better and better. That night at 'Audio' Agnes was suffering from a fairly severe winter bug yet was able to ensure that her powerful bass and vocal components were expertly delivered, as always Saffire's mastery of her guitar appeared to be so effortless, the result of the most gentle touches on the strings, Sinead enthralled the audience as she guided us through the set whilst ensuring that we were all able to follow the lyrical thread, and last but certainly not least, the sublime Vikki was sitting behind her beautiful white British Drum Company kit and looking so effortlessly in control of such power!
Quite early, the evening was over – the venue had to turn things around for a club night to take them into the wee small hours and generate the profits necessary to allow them to provide performance opportunities for gigs such as that which I had experienced. With almost 100 miles to drive back home, I wasn't too put out by the early-ish finish.
Previously I had been accompanied by professional photographer Patrick Rafferty who had been able to capture some excellent images of the very photogenic Courtesans; not so on this night and the predominantly back-lit stage didn't really work with my camera but some others were there who were able to capture some excellent images for posterity, you only need to check out their Facebook page to find numerous examples of excellent image captures of this highly photogenic band. Great also to see representation from 'Goth On The Croft' at the venue; I am now very happy to have their calendar hanging in my hall – all sale proceeds to 'The Sophie Lancaster Foundation'!
After parting company with my nephew when my brother-in-law arrived to give him a lift I made my way back to my car and enjoyed listening to the Bullet Height CD which provided an excellent soundtrack as I made my way back east across central Scotland under a cloudless sky lit by a 3rd quarter half moon.
