This is one of those albums that both received and deserved the title “classic.” It’s also rather hard to find in quality shape. Why? This is probably the old Sheffield Labs most famous recorded direct to disc title, and since there were only a very limited number pressed, and it came out in 1975, means that just on attrition alone the number of copies still in circulation has dropped and the number of mint original pressings is even fewer still. Produced by Doug Sax and engineered by Bill Schnee let’s you know it was a quality production right from the get go. And having Motown ringer Thelma Houston leading the band gave it a further leg up. These direct to disc recordings, no matter what you think of their musical merit, offer the closest sound we’ll ever get to being in the studio. No multiple takes pieced together, no overdubs, just play and pray you get it right because what you play went direct to the lacquer. Then, add a playlist that is not just audiophile dreck, and stick the band with the cream of the studio musician crop and you get an album that is both musically fun to listen to AND a treat for the ears. Here we get musicians like Lincoln Mayorga, Michael Omartian, Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, Chuck Findley, Jim Horn, Tom Scott, and a host of others. I pull one of my two copies out every so often both to listen to the music and to recalibrate my ears as to what recorded sound should actually sound like. If you ever run across any Sheffield Labs DTD album, grab it. It’ll sound wonderful. If you find a copy of this one, you’ll have hit the jackpot.
