Making your way out of the theater with Jax, you couldn't help but listen to her rambling about the movie you both just came from.
"All I'm sayin' is that ya can't retell a story with a smart main character an' then just- not show him bein' smart!"
"I get that, I'm not saying anything to the contrary.. but what I am saying is that there were at least a couple bits that weren't as bad."
She gives you a side glance, scoffing slightly. "Pff, yeah? Like what?"
"Well, the effects were.. mostly good, excluding near the ending. Because like, why does it feel like they ran out of vfx budget for—"
Suddenly, a rumble of thunder cut off your dialogue, Jax flinching slightly. Looking towards where the sound came from, you both can see dark rainclouds quickly rolling in, the faint scent of petrichor on the air.
You eye the incoming storm, slightly surprised. "Huh.. didn't the forecast say the rain was supposed to roll in around the evening?"
Turning towards Jax, you're a bit more surprised at the anxiety you could see in her face. "Yeah.. let's get going, I don't wanna get caught out in the rain."
"Right, we're parked a ways down, let's hurry up a bit."
With that, the two of you started to hustle a bit, heading back to your car as the clouds continued to roll in quicker.. and before you knew it, the rain started absolutely coming down, no warning sprinkle. Jax seemed panicked at this, given the way she started to damn near sprint the final stretch.
Unfortunately, just after she rounds the corner, you hear her trip. "Shit!"
Catching up to her.. you see something very unexpected. Jax did fall, yes.. but immediately you notice the fish tail in place of where her legs were supposed to be.
She looks over at you, trying to lift herself up as much as she can. "A little help, please?"
Shaking off your shock, you go over and see the fish tail up-close, just about the same shade as the rest of her. "Here, you gotta hold my phone, I'll wrap my arms over your shoulders but you gotta carry me.. there's still people around."
Taking her phone, you help her up and carry her the last several feet to your car before opening the door and sitting her inside. Heading around the front of the car, you hop into the driver's side and shut the door.. leaving quite the silence between the two of you.
It takes a couple moments, but Jax speaks up first. "Thanks.. my phone?"
You hand it over to her and she unlocks it, continuing to talk. "Right, so.. you- you probably got lots of questions, right?"
"I mean.. at least a few, yeah."
She sighs, switching her phone back off after having double checked the forecast. "Damn forecast… Alright look, I'm sorry I never told ya, it's just.. I never been that attached to- this part of me."
You see her gesture to her fishy tail, looking out the window at the rain. "Right.. well, if you don't like it, then I get why you didn't tell me."
"… You think anyone saw us?"
Taking a quick glance out of your own window, you don't see anyone else--even considering the rain in the way. "Doesn't look like anybody was nearby. So.. I'm guessing your change happens in the water?"
"Yeah, it's why I try and watch out for rain.. 'course that doesn't mean anything when the weather doesn't agree with the forecast."
"Right, so.. you wanna just head back home, now?"
She looks back over at you, slightly surprised. "What, not gonna press me for hiding this for so long?"
You just shrug as you fish your keys from your pocket. "Hey, I already said I get it.. if you don't wanna talk about it then we don't have to."
There's a bit of a pause before she responds. "Right.. thanks, by the way… Fuck, I just remembered my place is like three floors up, there's no way I'm dryin' out before we get there, especially not with it comin' down this hard."
"I mean, I could help you up the stars.. orrrr you could crash at my place."
She blinks in realization. "Oh yeah that's right, you're ground-floor huh. You got a spare room free?"
"I mean I got a pretty big bathtub."
"Oh ha ha, just because I'm aquatic…"
"No, but seriously.. I've been told my couch is pretty comfortable, if you don't mind."
There's a pause as she considers your offer. "I mean, if it's not a problem.. then sure, thanks."
Right as you pull out of the parking lot, she gets right back on her prior tirade about the movie. "Where was I.. oh yeah, you'd think for a Greek Epic they'd y'know, include all the gods involved!"
0 points for guessing the movie it's eh at best imho. absolutely not worth the nearly 3 hours nor even the free rewards ticket spent to watch it
just gonna say this before the floodgates open: i only really liked. like one thing that they added/changed, because it was cool the other is only cool outside the context of the story bc why???
anyways
hope you enjoyed ^^
oh yeah also- lowkey shoutout to @/magebunkshelf here on tumblr and on YT for their 'Your Friend is Secretly a Merfolk' audio. pretty much took the situation and applied it to Jax tbh
