A little before work Milt Jackson from the Mo-Fi SACD “Invitation.” Backed by Kenny Dorham, Jimmy Heath, Tommy Flanagan, Ron Carter and Modern Jazz Quartet band mate Connie Kay, Jackson is in full flower here. This 1962 Riverside recording as remastered by Mobile Fidelity for this SACD release is clean, clear and full of tonality. Jackson’s vibe work shimmers, Kay’s drums have snap, Carter’s bass is detailed and woody, Flanagan’s piano is portrayed as full sized (even if it’s confined to the left channel only. And the two horns, Dorham’s trumpet and Heath’s tenor sound appropriately real. But as good as the sound is, it takes a backseat to the music, which, since this is a Milt Jackson session, swings even when it shouldn’t. Jackson can’t help himself, everything he does swings, even if just a little (like his version of Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby, My Dear.”) It would be easy to overlook this session given all the work Jackson has committed to tape either solo or as part of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but that goodness Mo-Fi had the sense to reissue it. Now we can enjoy it in sound better than its ever had. If you’re a Milt Jackson fan, you WANT this disc. If you’re a jazz fan, you NEED this disc. And if you’re a music lover should be on the lookout for this disc. Very, very highly recommended. #SACD #digital #jazz #music #stereo #album #recordingmusic #recordingsession #recording #audio #audiophile #audiorecording
