Shit. What am I even doing here?
When you had received the invitation to your ex-fiance’s father’s birthday party, you assumed it was a mistake. You gathered up your courage and made the awkward phone call to his mother, to let her know her assistant had left you on the usual guest list.
“Not a mistake at all, dear. We would love to see you. Josh might have been stupid enough to break up with you but the rest of us are not.”
That broke the ice, a little. You told her you would be there, picked out an outfit that was modest but would make your ex (hopefully) drool at the very sight of you, and drove over on the given day. Your hopes of showing Josh how well you were doing without him were dashed when you saw the model-beautiful woman on his arm -- and the huge diamond that had once graced your left ring finger now on hers.
So, you avoided them as best you could, mingling with the other guests and catching up with the rest of his family. Eventually, though, running into him and his new fiancee couldn’t be stopped; they were making their way towards you and you had nowhere to run or hide without making even more of a fool of yourself.
“Y/N, it’s been a while,” Josh grinned, an arm tight around her waist. “How’ve you been? What’s new? This is Erica, my new fiancee.”
New fiancee. The words dripped with every desire to know you were jealous, hurt -- anything to know he had gotten the better of you. You opened your mouth to lie, but before you could, someone put an arm around your shoulders and pulled you to his side, kissing your temple.
“Hey, I’m so sorry -- bartender was a talker,” the man said, handing you a beer. “What did I miss?”
“Uh, sweetie, this is Josh and his fiancee, Erica.”
The man smiled and extended his hand. “Dr. Jack Ryan. Nice to meet both of you.”
Jack handled everything. He was constantly holding your hand, keeping an arm around you -- laying claim to you in one way or another. He came up with a perfectly feasible story for how the two of you met, on the spot. The lie was easy and effortless. When Josh and Erica finally walked away, you and Jack turned to each other.
“Thanks for that,” you smiled. “I almost want to ask if you’ve done that before.”
Jack smirked. “Well, I was watching you since you walked in, to be honest. I may or may not have asked around about you, and then I saw the look on your face when he was walking toward you.”
You nodded. “Ah. I don’t know if I should be more creeped out and worried, or grateful and flattered.”
“You already said thank you, so,” Jack shrugged, teasing you.
With a chuckled you nodded. “Grateful and flattered it is. So, Dr. Ryan. What do I owe you for saving me?”
He pressed his lips together, considering every centimeter of your face, it seemed, before he answered.
“How about we get the hell out of here and you let me take you dinner?”
Biting your lip, you feigned thinking it over. In truth, you’d been hoping he would ask you out from the moment he had first kissed your temple. So, you nodded and leaned into him.
“Get me outta here, Jack,” you smiled.
Smiling and taking your hand, Jack led you out to his car, promising to bring you back for yours later on.

The decor was simple but perfect. The finger foods were arranged in a beautiful, inviting spread. The guest list was short but all of the people John wanted to see on his birthday.
“I can’t believe you pulled this off on such short notice!” he exclaimed. “Y/N, this is ... wow. I’m amazed. I feel very loved.”
He put an arm around your shoulders and pulled you against him, kissing your hair. You grinned and lifted your chin for an actual kiss. John had no problem obliging you.
“Yes, well, I could conquer the world if I set my mind to it,” you sighed. “Lucky for you, I lack motivation.”
John laughed and kissed you again. “I have no doubts, babe. Let’s go mingle with these guests and later on, I can show you how thankful and amazed I truly am.”

He remembered the day she left vividly. Hell, he could still hear the slam of the door every time her pretty face floated through his mind. She had left when Jack was in the middle of recovering from the helicopter crash. He was bitter and angry and, truth be told, he had pushed her away.
Maybe the never-fading memories were why it was such a shock to Jack when he spotted her standing in Greer’s office one quiet afternoon. Her expression was all professionalism, but Jack could still see the hint of a smile that always seemed to grace her lips; like she knew a secret, like she had something to tell the world but wouldn’t tell.
He knocked lightly on the door before poking his head in. Y/N turned around to see him and the hint of a smile disappeared. She appeared to be just as shocked as Jack felt.
“Good timing,” Greer said, standing from the desk and putting a folder under his arm. “Dr. Ryan, this is Y/N Y/L/N. She’ll be working alongside you, picking up some of the extra cases coming in.”
Jack nodded. “Cleaning up my messes. That’s nothing new, huh?”
Sensing the awkward moment, Greer excused himself to take the file ... elsewhere. He closed the door quietly behind him, leaving Jack and Y/N to themselves.
“It’s been a while,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest and glancing at the floor. “How’ve you been, Jack?”
He couldn’t help but feel a little angry, though he had pushed her to leave. “A while, yeah. Almost four years.”
Y/N nodded. “Yeah. That’s a while.”
“Well, as you can see, I’m doing all right. Working here, just helped take down a terrorist. Not the same bearded, angry man I was when you left.”
“Not bearded, but still angry,” Y/N returned, swallowing the lump in her throat. “You know why I left. You didn’t want me anymore. I wanted to help you and you ... you wanted to drown. I couldn’t watch that happen.”
Jack scoffed. “Be that as it may, you let me push you away. If we were stronger --”
“Don’t,” she warned. Tears brimmed in her eyes. “We were stronger. Together. But when I was the only one holding us up, it wasn’t enough for you.”
Jack shook his head and shrugged. “Guess it doesn’t matter now anyway, huh? We’ve both clearly moved on. I don’t need you to hold me up anymore. So let’s just get that straight right now. Hash it out and be done. This is going to be a working thing and nothing else, Y/N.”
“Great. Just great. Especially since you seem so fine without me.”
Her arms dropped then and she pushed past Jack, out of the office, before she was even a step past him, Jack knew was he was going to hear next: the slamming of the door behind her as she left.

Summer break had, sadly, come to an end. Gone were the days of laying by the pool or roadtripping down to Florida with your best friends for a weekend getaway -- not that you had much to get away from. After college graduation, it was two-and-a-half glorious months of nothing before starting a marketing internship for a local branch of a corporate paper company.
“C’mon, just one more weekend in Florida,” you friend Anna, who had managed an accounting internship, begged. “We had so much fun! That guy you kissed, Y/N. We could maybe find him again!”
You rolled your eyes. “First of all, no, we are not doing another weekend in Florida now that we have jobs, and second of all, we won’t find him again. He wasn’t from Florida.”
“Let’s go wherever he was, then. He was so cute!”
Pushing the button in the elevator cart to take you up to the Dunder Mifflin office, you laughed at Anna’s pleading. You weren’t happy to see summer go, but she really wasn’t getting over it any time soon. You didn’t mind, though, thinking of the guy you had met and kissed that last weekend in Florida. He was older than you, neither of you shared details, but it had still been an amazing weekend with him.
The elevator cart opened; you and Anna walked toward the office door. She took a deep breath, attempting to look more professional and composed, and mostly succeeding. As the two of you hung up your coats, Anna had one more question.
“What was his name again?”
Laughing, you turned away from the coat rack. Before you could answer her, your eyes went wide at the tall man sitting at one of the sales desks. He looked just as surprised to see you as you were to see him.
“Jim?”

A peaceful Sunday morning found you enjoying brunch on the patio of one of your favorite local places. You sipped your mimosa, picked at your french toast, and chuckled at the day’s comics in the newspaper.
You were flipping through for the sports section when his voice caught your eye. A handsome man with brown hair and eyes that were green or blue -- you couldn’t tell from where you were sitting -- was being seated by the hostess a couple of tables over. His gaze met yours and he smiled, causing you to blush and go back to your newspaper. Though, you did peek at him several times over the baseball scores. Every time, he was looking at you, too.
The waiter brought your check eventually, and you knew it was time to go. You weren’t going to have the nerve to approach the man before you left, so you gave him one more smile as you tucked a couple of bills under the ticket and sat back again with the newspaper. The restaurant staff didn’t mind you hanging around after you paid, so you usually took your time
“Waiting for change?”
You looked up and there he was, one hand in the pocket of his pants, the other one holding a folded napkin. Green. His eyes were definitely green.
“Uh, no, I just like to take my time. I come here every Sunday, so they’re used to me hanging out.”
He licked his lips and held out to you the hand that had the napkin in it. You shook his hand, and the napkin stayed with you.
“I’m Jack Ryan. When I leave here, I’m going to walk around the corner and wait at the mom and pop shop on the right -- if you read that napkin and decide you want to meet me, I’ll see you there.” He started to leave, but turned back to you. “I hope I see you, Y/N.”
It didn’t even occur to you that he had said your name without you giving the information. As Jack walked away, you unfolded the napkin, smiling in anticipation of what the message could say.
“Get out now. While you still can.”
Your smile faded; that was not what you had expected. Hurrying to gather your things, you thanked your waiter for and rushed for the mom and pop shop around the corner.

The bar was crowded but when the dramatic brunette who had been annoying the shit out of you moved out of your line of sight, there he was. Tall, handsome, and a certain je ne sais quoi that made your nerves tingle from head to toe. You sat up a little straighter, smoothing out your hair and your clothes as his eyes met yours.
Your fidgeting seemed to delight him; he smiled a little to himself before moving through the crowd in your direction. The tumbler in his hand had only traces of whatever dark liquor he had been drinking, so you motioned for the bartender to bring another round for the both of you.
“Thanks,” the handsome man said, leaning on the bar next to you. He held out a hand, which you accepted. “I’m Jack Ryan.”
“Y/N,” you returned.
Jack raised his brow. “No last name?”
You pretended to think for a moment. “Mmm, not yet. New around here, Jack?”
“How’d you guess?”
“Because I frequent this bar and I’ve never seen you around. And neither has the bartender.”
Jack smiled, flirtatious as you had seen him yet. “You asked?”
You nodded. “He’s my brother’s friend. I’m kind of a VIP, I guess you could say.”
Jack seemed impressed. He thanked the bartender for the fresh drink and clinked his glass with yours and watched you as you both drank. He bit his lip and moved onto the stool next to you. You took another drink and kept asking questions.
“What brings you here, then?”
He drew in a deep breath. “Well, Y/N, I could tell you that but then I’d have to kill you -- and I get the feeling you could take me on. Although, it might be a risk I’m willing to take.”
You laughed. “Shrouded in mystery and ready to die -- just how I like my men.”
The both of you laughed at that. From there it was more small talk; you were mysterious about your job as well, since Jack wasn’t exactly open. A few drinks later, you tossed a couple of bills on the counter for your brother’s friend and slid off the stool.
“Well, Jack Ryan. You gonna spend the night alone or with me?” you smirked.
Jack downed what was left of his drink and stood with you, taking you by the hand. “I can’t turn down a beautiful woman. Lead the way.”
You smirked and pulled him through the crowd and out of the bar. It had been far too easy to lure him in; soon enough, you’d have the information you needed and you could move on from Dr. Jack Ryan -- but not before you had a little fun first.

“Listen, I’m not the kind of guy you want to get involved with, okay? I don’t take things seriously as I should — or so I’ve been told — I’m not the crazy romantic type, I’m not the kind to settle down. I’m not what women want. Not really, not in the end.”
You looked at the man sitting next to you on the porch swing. The colors of late summer dusk were all around the two of you, the sun just disappearing behind the horizon line. Taking John’s hand, you laced your fingers between his and knew that you were home.
“I don’t care what anyone else says. You’re the guy who makes me smile when I don’t want to but I need to. The one who hugs me until I pull away, not until he does. You’re the one who brings me flowers because you saw them and they reminded you of me. Do I wanna settle down with you? Yeah, at some point. But it’s only been a few months. We’re not there yet. I’m willing to give it a shot and cross that bridge when we come to it, if you are.”
John’s smile was unmistakable; he didn’t want to let you go, didn’t want to disappoint you. You were a woman finally on the same relationship page as he was. You were exactly what he needed; for that, John knew that he was home, too.
Pulling you into a tight hug, John kissed your temple and thanked you. “I promise to never try to leave again, unless one or both of us are really unhappy.”
You hugged him tighter. “I’m sorry someone made you think it’s hard to love you.”
“I don’t believe that person now,” John said, pulling away only enough to press his lips softly to yours. “Not anymore.”
