August Jernberg's 1885 Treppenhuis is interesting as much for its content as for the painting itself.
After all, the work that a feather-duster-toting docent gestures towards is Rembrandt van Rijn's famous The Nightwatch, from 1642.
As you'll notice, as it appears here The Nightwatch has a hazy, shadowy appearance—a quality that gained it its modern title. That's not, though, what you'd see if you visited the Rijksmuseum today.
In fact, the dark brown of the painting is the product of an old and darkened varnish, cleaned in the 1940s.
