August Loves
Summer’s sizzle is coming to a close. It’s almost time to trade beach bags for book bags. But there’s still so much to savor before the inevitable switch to routine and schedule. Here’s what we love about the last summer days...
1. Casual Suppers. Doesn’t matter if the house is a wreck, or if you eat chicken salad for supper. True friends don’t care about fanciness and formality. But these darling Gold Bug Napkin Rings from Mini at Croghan’s make any table look casually chic.
2. Those John’s Island ‘maters wont be around much longer! If you need some inspiration as to what to do with the last crop, our friends at Salthouse Catering can guide you with culinary creativity. Or just slice and sprinkle with Bull’s Bay Red Mash Sea Salt from Preservation Society of Charleston’s King Street Store.
3. Football season is around the corner, and M. Dumas and Sons has you covered. From tailored collegiate looks, to your favorite school on needlepoint belts, wallets, and keychains, they have what you need to spiff up your favorite sports fan.
4. The College of Charleston campus has been a bit quiet without you. Welcome back students!
5. Pam Harrington Exclusives still has a Kiawah vacation awaiting you. Squeeze one more family getaway in before homework takes over. You won’t be sorry!
6. From August 9-13, Cirque Du Soleil is going to entertain us with their OVO production. We can’t wait to experience the colorful artistry of insects coming to creative life on stage at the North Charleston Coliseum. Get your tickets today!
7. Back to school shopping is a real treat on King Street especially with a stop at Hampden Clothing. The Stella McCartney boyfriend jean we spotted there is also great for weekend wear, Mom!
We wish you all a successful start to school and routine, and great joy savoring the last sweet days of summer.

AUGUST LOVES
“August brings into sharp focus and a furious boil everything I've been listening to in the late spring and summer.” - Henry Rollins
August: hot hot heat, rain showers every afternoon and me personally, in hibernation. But there are still some things to love!
1. BLUEBERRIES : i’ve been eating blueberry pancakes from The Sentient Bean sunday brunch, blueberry muffins from Back in the Day and raw blueberries from Forsyth Farmer’s Market. YUMMMMMY!
2. SANGRIA : chilled wine with fruit, can’t be beat for summer time drinking pleasure.
3. SUNFLOWERS: one of my favorite wild flowers and they never fail to make you feel happy and sunny.
4. OLIVE GREEN: love the army green as we start to think about fall wardrobe. It is also a great neutral with bright neons and tropical colors too!
5. FROZEN CUSTARD : super creamy and delicious, there is nothing better than a cold dessert for the hottest temps of the year.
6. TROPICAL NAILS : love to use bright colors on my nails this time of the year, with a little tan on the skin, bright colors POP!
7. AIR CONDITIONING : see above, i am in hibernation!
What do you love about August?

AUGUST LOVES : INTERESTING ADDRESSING
I am obsessed with writing letters, sending things via snail mail and also love paper & stationary products. I don’t think it comes a big surprise then that I love the outside of the envelope and strive to make it as exciting as its contents! I have some ideas on how you can make your next invite or regular old mail a bit more exciting with interesting addressing!
Calligraphy is a classic choice and few do it better than Lowcountry Paper Co. Shown above is an invitation suite that uses two different but cohesive styles for the save the date envelopes and the formal invitation. The Charleston in white ink on dover gray is just exquisite! The Savannah styles graces the black exterior of the envelopes on the bottom right.
French Knot Studios styled this Georgia inspired shoot that Izzy Hudgins captured and I just loved the fun of the mixed prints and casual lettering on these invites and thank you notes from Miss Wyolene.
French Knot styled this dreamy watercolor inspired shoot that featured paper from MIss Wyolene and the addressing on these invites feels loose and casual, just like the soiree it was planned to go with!
What are your favorite tricks for making envelope addressing interesting?
AUGUST LOVES: GOLD RINGS
Peackthe Peack Ban dThere are lots of different types and styles of gold rings in our local ecosystem. Since I bought a simple thin gold band from Charlottesville, Mi Ossa, I have been looking for other statement type rings to pair with it and I gathered up a few options from our local members.
Above, from top left, clockwise: Keep with the simple lines and add some M. Liz Design stacking midi rings to the mix, trendy and youthful! For a more fanciful counterpart and a larger statement, try shopSCAD artist Elizabeth Thompson’s Lace Ring. The next two are by shopSCAD artist Mia Hebib and are like wearing tiny sculptures on your fingers, elegant and feminine but still pack a punch! Bloom and The Bends are the two I was most drawn to but she has a whole line of beautiful flowing metal pieces. A touch on the simple side but with a bit of texturing for those amoung us that are detail orientated, check out Rebecca Overman’s Peak Band at shopSCAD. Rounding up this round up is Elizabeth Thompson’s Double Paris Ring. It gives me a bit of the equestrian vibe and plays very nice with others!
Which would you see yourself wearing?
AUGUST LOVES
Above: Carrie Friesen captured this great back to school shot. August to me always meant picking out the first day of class outfit and my dad taking our picture to look at our yearly progress.
“August brings into sharp focus and a furious boil everything I've been listening to in the late spring and summer.”-Henry Rollins
August, sweltering hot, humid, rain storms every afternoon. This is the prime dog days of summer in the south. We all suffer together though! We’ve also got seven GREAT things to love about this month that sometimes can be difficult to wrap our brains around.
1. VOLUME TWO: yes, that’s right! The Scout is OUT! We will be distributing volume 2 copies as soon as we get the shipment. They will be HOT of the presses. We have worked hard this year and feel like the book is even better than volume 1, thanks to the photo skills of Krisztian Lonyai and the team at DX as well as TSG HQ.
2. MINT GREEN: lovely, refreshing, sweetly summery but looks great with olive or royal or in stripes or prints. Looks great with orange, pink and black too! Mint Green is a favorite color and it seems very apt for this time of the year.
3. PLANNERS: School is in session and the year always seems to take the same cycle even though we are well past school time! This Planner from Whitney English looks and functions great!
4. KNAPSACKS: The 90s trends are back in full force and the only one we can really get behind is knapsacks. Perfectly unstructured to throw and go this waxed cotton version is a classic.
5. LACE DRESSES: The more casual the shape the better with this seemingly “fancy” fabric. There is something feminine, pretty but seriously timeless!
6. CABANA STRIPES: There is something so lovely about Cabana Stripes. They immediately evoke summer, luxury and fun! [Photo by John Harper/Corbis]
7. BENTO BOXES: The perfect way to make packing you and your kids lunches fun! And eating the rainbow is fun and easy with Bento Boxes!
