Dawes - When My Time Comes
After watching Coachella raise Tupac with a hologram, I figured all bets were off. This song has been a favorite of mine ever since my friend Luke introduced me to it about a month ago. I definitely have a soft spot for good harmonies, and Dawes spares no expense with this song. Thanks for listening! :)
In late March, we were afforded the incredible opportunity of flying to San Diego, CA to shoot an engagement film for our sister Vanessa and her fiance Mitch. Despite some unexpected weather, it was an unforgettable week for all parties, and they did a wonderful job of hosting us. (As soon as we flew in, they picked us up from the airport and brought us back to a feast of the most delicious Mexican food any of us have experienced before or after.) For the first day of shooting, we drove out to La Jolla Beach in some light rain. We stopped on the way to grab an umbrella or two, and upon exiting the store realized that the "light rain" had evolved into a monsoon of heavy downpours and high winds. This, we quickly decided would only be a minor setback, and we pressed on to La Jolla. When we got to the beach we obviously needed a plan to deal with our equipment in the rain, as our only rigging to stage the camera was a Merlin Steadicam. After turning up our Brother ESP we ended up walking, gliding, and running together in perfect (but more often comically imperfect) sync across the beaches of La Jolla; one manning the Merlin, and the other angling a spare umbrella against the wind and rain. After a cold first day we decided to trek to La Jolla again, as well as a desert area a little to the east. The sun was shining high in the sky, and we were all happy to have a day free of rain to enjoy the area's natural climate. Wrong again! As we approached the baren landscapes around the Viejas Indian Reservation, we noticed something out of place. Snow. There was snow covering the desert! Cars were pulled over, children were out sledding on saucers and shovels and anything they could find while parents took family photos of this seemingly "once-in-a-lifetime" oddity. We, however, weren't quite as amused. Never ones to give up, we shot some b-roll of the occasion, and pressed west back to La Jolla. There we found retribution for our few first hardships of the trip. While the waves crashed hard and high in remembrance of the stormy days before, the beaches and cliffs lay sun-soaked and almost bare from tourists. This was the day we were waiting for. Vanessa and Mitch decided to go for a more formal look that day, to give some contrast to the rainy-day casual wear we shot before. We found a perfect location for the interviews right around a protrusion in the cliffside; and after a well-timed 40-yard-dash to keep Vanessa's dress dry, we found ourselves on a stage of solid rock looking at a background we could before only dream of.
So after giving it some thought, I decided that this tumblr would be best put to use by doing covers more often, with less production time (aka webcam), then do the higher production ones when I get the time. I'm struck at least 3 or 4 times a day with inspiration of a cover I'd like to do, and would rather just be able to pick up my guitar and arrange it and record it, rough and raw for you to hear. There will absolutely still be the fully produced, multi-camera, multi-angle live covers you've seen on here so far, but I've decided to go for quantity (AND quality) rather than only quality when I have the time. As for this song, I'm not quite sure exactly where I remember it from, but I know it from when I was a little kid, and the chorus definitely does something to me. As always, thank you so much for listening, and come by and drop me a REQUEST! :)
