Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal
Notre-Dame Basilica is located in the province of Quebec in Montreal, Canada. Built upon an earlier stone church from the 17th century in the 1820s, it was the first Gothic Revival-style church in Canada and Montreal’s oldest Catholic church. The exterior has two towers, the west tower holds the famous 11,000 kg Jean-Baptiste bell, and the east tower has a carillon of ten bells. Three statues decorate the façade, with the Virgin Mary in the center, St John the Baptist on the right, and St Joseph on the left. The interior can hold 8,000-10,000 people and boasts vaulted ceilings. The basilica has tranquil chapels, ornate wood pillars, statues, wood carvings, gold-leaf ornamentation, religious paintings, stained-glass windows with Biblical scenes, a pulpit that sits 45.9 feet high, and a 7,000-pipe Casavant Freres organ. The interior underwent redecorating in the 1870s and 80s. In 1889, a new chapel, Notre-Dame Chapelle de Sucre-Coeur, was added for smaller congregations and was consecrated in 1891. The chapel was damaged by fire in 1978 and rebuilt in 1980. In 1982, the Catholic church was made a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II. In 1990, it was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. Notre-Dame Basilica is open to the public. The Aura Experience is a music and light show held inside the basilica.
