Stages of the Aurora Borealis. Seeing the Aurora Borealis directly above you (Photo 1) is a very special thing. It’s unworldly and takes your breath away. But what exactly are you seeing when this happens? . Photo 2. The Aurora Borealis commonly start off as a thin arc through the night sky, starting from the east and travelling to the west. Once it becomes more active, the arc starts to “fold” on itself creating pleats much like a curtain. Photo 3. You’ll see the Aurora Borealis twist and turn like a road weaving through the mountains, all the while expanding its reach around the curtain, breaking up with bright colours and movement. Photo 4. As you marvel at the Northern Lights from afar, you’ll notice after some time, it moves closer to you, bringing in all the action of the moving lights so close that it’s as if you can reach up and touch them. Photo 5. As the Northern Lights moves further westward, it eventually passes directly over you. With all its twists and turns, the stream of light moves quickly. Photo 1. A Corona is when you look straight up and it seems as if the lights are converging from one point, much like seeing railroad tracks converging to a point in the far distance. Remembering that the Aurora Borealis happens several KMs/miles away from Earth’s surface, seeing it above you makes it seem like it’s emanating from one spot when really from someone looking at the Aurora Borealis from several KMs away, they will be admiring moving curtains of Aurora Borealis, much like in Photos 3 and 4. It’s all about perspective. . A print I made for Sabakon 2015. This one is of my character, Yuki sitting in a snowy area, gazing at the falling snowflakes. Enjoy~
