For Halloween - the Apache Jumping Spider 🎃🕷️👻🕷️ (Phidippus apacheanus)
I was reviewing past spider photos and came across these photos of an Apache Jumping Spider I took on October 9, 2023 on the River Trail in Santa Fe. This is more likely a female as males are often a more vibrant reddish color.
The Apache Jumping Spider is a carnivorous hunter known for its excellent eyesight, active daytime hunting, and hydraulic-powered jumps. They do not build webs for catching prey, but use silk to create anchor lines and protective retreats, and can be identified by their black bodies with orange or red coloring and iridescent green chelicerae.
Summary
* Appearance: They are black with orange or red, and sometimes yellow markings, featuring iridescent green chelicerae.
* Habitat: Found in grasslands, prairies, and dry fields, they are often found on shrubs, cacti, and yucca.
* Diet: They primarily eat insects and other spiders, and they hunt by actively stalking and then pouncing on their prey.
* Webbing: They use silk to create safety lines before jumping and for building small, tent-like retreats for resting and laying eggs.
* Hunting: They hunt during the day, using their keen eyesight to spot prey and then jumping to capture it.
* Mimicry: Their coloration is thought to mimic that of some velvet ants.
Interesting facts
* Advanced vision: They have keen eyesight, possibly extending into the ultraviolet range, which helps them stalk prey and supports their complex courtship rituals.
* Hydraulic jumps: They can jump several times their body length without large muscular legs by changing the pressure of fluid in their legs, which is a hydraulic system.
* Safety line: Before a jump, they always attach a silk safety line, acting as a tether so they can climb back up if they fall.
* Web retreats: They build silken retreats for protection, especially at night, and females use them for laying eggs.
* Active and curious: They are most active in the daytime and are known to show interest in humans, often turning to face observers.
* Pest control: They are considered effective natural pest controllers in agriculture because they eat various insect pests.
