suranga fernando Is such a cool name. How’s did you come up with it’s name? What was the inspiration?

agdlsgs well i came up with its name seven years ago back in 2019, i think i liked it while flipping through a site of sri lankan names since i wanted my step to be sri lankan like me. suranga can mean a number of things apparently

The name Suranga is derived from Sanskrit and has origins in India and Sri Lanka. In Sanskrit, the word "suranga" means "one who is protected by the gods" or "one with divine qualities." (x)

Suranga is a name of Sanskrit origin, commonly used in Sri Lanka and India. It primarily means "good color," "beautiful hue," or "golden," derived from "su-" (good, well) and "ranga" (color, hue, stage, performance). The name thus implies beauty, vibrancy, or a pleasant appearance. In a broader sense, particularly in Sinhala, it can also refer to a "tunnel" or "cave," though the aesthetic meaning is more prevalent for the given name. Associated names include Ranga and Surangi (feminine form).

another site said about bravery? anyways i don't fully understand how it can have so many meanings, but maybe it's fitting given how multi-facted sura is. i did know about the divine thing, and about being associated with orange (i had the re-gene thing spoiled for me by all the fanart but it might've been subconscious that i picked it for Orange), i never knew about the performance/stage association until just now but i do find that quite funny how fitting it is. it's also unisex!

as for fernando that one's just. a commonish sri lankan last name LMAO. i just like having character names that flow together and sound good. in-universe sura went by a series of aliases for a while before getting basically adopted by a grouchy laundromat owner whom it ended up saving (sumith fernando) and then deciding to adopt his last name. sura had a track record of getting adopted by older people apparently since there was also elena that did that too lol. and sura worked at his laundromat! sura also picked its first name after sorta talking with mr fernando (or uncle, as he insisted sura call him) and getting more immersed in sri lankan culture enough to properly consider part of it. Some research into intersex variations and third genders helped nudge it that direction and it also just genuinely liked the sound of the name

fun fact mr fernando got killed by the special directive doing cleanup when he checked up on sura's old place after heartbreak (he knew sura was a vigilante and that maybe sura was sidestep but they never said anything out loud about it) (: and then sura found out by reading a report while semi-possessing farm staff and reading through their eyes (: it's one of the MANY reasons sura shut itself off from everyone and keeps itself at a professional distance from its crew hurray for feeding into the outside scar yay yippeeeeeeeeeeee

sura also keeps a tealight and incense lit for him in its office at base. it's one of those things that's comforting for it even if it doesn't fully feel like it's connected to the culture, or deserves to be. and it's a reminder of the stakes. about taking down the farm and the sd, and not to get attached again. or at least as suranga/the other aliases it now runs by. (failed with that one though.)

Sura assumption(s)!

Sura has mixed feelings about hairdye. Would be so fun if the whole bleach part and resultant damage wasn't a necessity

oh god this ones from march. whoops. okay let's go

HMM hairdye. sura may have entertained having bright colours in the past but the instinct to stay lowkey overrode that a bunch, and it clashes a bunch with how it currently presents itself anyways. but dying it a subtle shade of purple or red w/o bleach involved? yeah that could work and i'm sure it did experiment a bit with that back in the day (maybe at themmy's encouragement)

and OW but yes, definitely. sura was always very helpful and loved its job at the laundromat helping fix things and doing alterations, and of course protected the area. kind of odd, but sweet, and very good at repairs. one of the people that misses sura is mr fernando's ex wife nafrin (they divorced long before sura showed up, they came to america together to escape the civil war and lived through the big one, she got to the point where while she still loved and cared for him, sumith's alcoholism he developed to cope with it was just too much for her to handle. they still continued to run the laundromat together and were fairly amicable). sura talked with her a lot being co-workers and sura associating often with sumith. sumith and sura both died/disappeared in a short period of time (sura cos of hb and sumith by going to see if it had come back to the apartment by chance, since he knew sura had a cat (fred)), and that was the last she saw of sumith, so it was a bit of a double whammy. while she did at first kind of blame sura she ultimately did mourn both of them.

when sura came back after escaping and checked in on her (from a distance/via lots of puppets), she'd moved away from the area since it had been gentrified and the laundromat's been long gone now. sura makes sure she's safe and (anonymously) sends her some money every month to make sure she's taken care of. it's the least it can do.

glad you're also participating in this ask meme! you were the first person who approached this anon in this fandom, and I (anon, who had been in mostly anime/manga/gacha OC spaces) think seeing Sura and how you draw and characterise them has really opened my mind - in a good way of course - of how much more diverse and intersectional we can all make our MCs outside the scope that any canons already provide. you are not the only one, thankfully, but you were this anon's first and forever grateful for that 🤗🥰

i think i was gonna cry when i first received this and i'm going to cry again rereading it now, this so so sweet and extremely touching <33333 i'm so glad that me putting sura out there helped you and i'm so incredibly honoured. at first i wasn't entirely sure about the trajectory i was taking it, since sura began as a semi-self insert (and like me, is sri lankan and a cane user), changing its bodytype, its gender situation, the personality overhaul, the disability stuff etc. but now i can't ever see it differently cos they're all for the better to have gone slightly past what canon can offer. thank you for validating that <3
