Once I saw a post mention the concept of ausita as a ship and I'd never considered that before but now I would like to consider it very much in fact now I think Austria wanted to fuck Italy the whole time he lived with him and still does but is too proud to admit it

🐣 my favorite parent/child dynamic

It's Austria/Italy!! ;w; I just love how it started from pretty much rock bottom, with Austria being just an immature teen who pretty much took advantage of the power imbalance to use Chibitalia as a stress relief and bully him, but somehow as the decades went by and he became more mature, the relationship between them changed more and more until it became a proper parent/child dynamic. Besides, while early strips use Austria's bullying towards baby Feli as comic relief, it is also shown from the start that their relationship wasn't all bad and they also spent some quality time together (for instance Roderich allowed baby Feli to take beaks from chores to listen to his music when he caught him spying, because Roderich himself was pretty much broken inside and craving positive attention and praise). There's also the Sleeping with Sheep Drama CD where Hungary, Chibitalia and HRE are sleeping in the same bed and Erzsi convinces Roderich to stay there with them for some time too and makes him count sheep for her and the kids. How freaking wholesome is that?? ;_;

And like, the way Feli doesn't hold grudges and he's always happy to see Austria!! And how Austria allows Feli to hug him despite him generally not enjoying public displays of affection <33 He must care about him a lot if he allows it. I headcanon that both Feli and Roderich have in common a deep craving for human-like interactions between Personifications, and for this reason they tend to value relationships like that a lot, because that's one of the closest things they'll ever get to the condition of humans.

In the end, Roderich pretty much filled the spot left by Grandpa Rome's disappearance in Feli's life, and even if their relationship didn't start in the best way, Feli probably grew very attached to Austria (and Hungary) on a personal level because unlike Rome and HRE, he never left. That must be extremely comforting for someone with abandonment issues like him, and God knows how awful he must've felt, as Feliciano, to force himself to fight Roderich and Erzsebét for Italy's independence from Austria.

I hc that Feli never misses a year to spend Father's Day with Roderich (and Mother's Day with Erzsi) and calls him quite often to tell him stuff and ask him advice. Sometimes, it even feels too much for Roderich, but on the other hand it does fill his heart with joy that Feli is the kind of person he is. He definitely takes some pride in the way Feli turned out, too.

... I also headcanon that at some point, as a teen and before independence, Feli had developed a bit of an innocent crush on Austria, but that's beyond the point lol

As for Austria ships, I'll include the ones you mentioned and a few more that somewhat tickle my interest ...

🌸 FrAus: 8/10 - Their canon interactions, especially pre-HWS, are often hilarious and Hima just seemed to love to stuff them with low-key or high-key sexual innuendos, which I'm all in for!! ✨ On a more serious note, I think they have great chemistry together. France never hid that he finds Austria very attractive, and I personally headcanon that Austria finds France attractive too, although he really hates admitting it. They're both handsome, elegant men who love aesthetics, beauty and leisure and they definitely find that in each other. I think they also have chemistry on a more intellectual level and enjoy the challenge of discussing their opinions together. If Austria didn't find some sides of France particularly annoying, and perhaps if he wasn't the cause of his divorce with Spain, he'd probably feel less compelled to pretend he doesn't like him. Ideal circumstance/AU for how I like FrAus is probably in a somewhat historical setting to put those stainless aesthetics into good use (not necessarily Nationverse). If not, then just them being fancy together is enough, but I think I like it best when both parties know what they want and aren't blushy messes with no relationship experience. I like them both knowing their guns and having no fear to use them.

🌸 SpAus: 10/10 - what can I say, they're my OTP!! ;w; 💕 There's just something so beautiful about them having been into an almost 200 years long marriage, despite its ups and downs, being forced to break up, yet being aware that no one will ever get to know them like the other no matter what. And their feelings are still there, despite everything, despite the centuries they spent apart, the way Austria's heart beats for Spain is just special and different than how it does for anyone else, and same goes for Spain's heart. They'll always be tied by an invisible red string, they'll always occasionally slip into melancholic fond memories of their times together and crave more, regardless if they ever build the courage to act upon it in Modern Day or not. The contrast between their naive, young yet passionate first love and marriage ... And their feelings now, like a fire resting beneath ashes, two adults who now carry so much more experience, life and traumas on their shoulders, yet still yearn for each other in a way that is coated with nostalgia and makes them take risks again for the sake of their love, suddenly feeling like all those centuries never passed and for a moment they're just the same awkward teens full of love and naivety they used to be. AAAAAAAA I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH 😭😭😭💕💕💕 I am not really picky with scenarios, I like SpAus both Historical and in Modern Day because they have two different yet complementary flavors. I also don't mind them in Human!AU ... The pet peeve I have is not much about the scenario but rather about the headcanons used. I not only disagree, but I am also kind of uncomfortable with the headcanon that portrays Spain as an abusive or violent husband, even if it's just "at times" I can't vibe with it, so I rarely actively enjoy reading about it (It's more like, sometimes I close an eye on it if I like everything else about the piece). I headcanon their marriage to have been healthy enough on a personal level, not perfect but also not a complete mess, despite their bosses being shitty people for not really caring about their feelings or opinions. Even when they divorced, I think it broke their heart (Austria's especially) but they weren't actually mad at each other, or took it very personal. Spain in canon seems pretty apologetic and awkward about their divorce in the strips set around that time, so I can't see him actually putting malicious thoughts into his activities.

🌸 Edelweiss: 7/10 - I've never really gotten much into Edelweiss, although I like them as childhood friends ;-; I can see the appeal, but personally I just don't see Roderich interested in Basch past a fondness of their childhood memories together. Switzerland, on the other hand, yes, I absolutely see him crushing hard for Austria, whether he admits it or not. For this reason, my favorite Edelweiss scenario is Switzerland pining and longing for Austria, but his feelings not being returned. Man probably will never even find the courage to confess, because he knows it, he can feel that Roderich looks at him with sympathy, fondness even, but it is not the same way he looks at Spain, or Hungary, or even France and Prussia and it hurts so much that he wishes he could stop feeling the way he does, but he just cannot help it and the more he tries to wipe Roderich out of his mind, the more childhood memories resurface to make him suffer and remind him he probably won't ever get what he yearns for. Yes sorry, I really like the dynamic of one-sided Edelweiss but I have yet to find a proper, mutual Edelweiss fic/doujin that I like enough to change my mind on this 🙈

🌸 AusHun: 8.5/10 - I mean, they're pretty much canon aren't they? Hungary has been crushing on him since the 1500s, and Austria apparently still sends a present anonymously to her address every Valentine's Day. I don't actively ship them, I guess, like I rarely have for them the kind of feelings and thoughts I have for Spaus, but they're lovely together and I'll eat alive anyone who says Austria was abusive or a misogynist towards her. HE HAS NEVER BEEN. This is pretty specific I think, and mostly an idea that has been floating in my mind for quite a while, but I really like this historical scenario (possibly Humanverse? I guess it'd work best that way but I like it either way) where most people/humans aren't aware that Hungary is in fact a girl and didn't realize that the male knight that is always at Austria's side and fighting so bravely for him is, in fact, his wife. Contrary to what some fans seem to believe, I think Erzsi feels very free to express both her more feminine and more masculine side with Roderich, and Roderich just loves her equally both ways. I think he also finds Hungary in men's clothes very attractive, tbh ... Not that he doesn't like her wearing dresses and such, but he loves how comfortable and happy she is to switch between the two however she pleases. She's both a lovely, caring, feminine spouse and a brave, strong, tough knight and this duality just drives Austria crazy with love.

🌸 PruAus: 9/10 - They're basically Fruk but in a different font. And it has Austria and Prussia in it! What's there not to love!? Honestly, it doesn't even have to be romantic for me to appreciate, I like them both ad a ship and as simple bickering frenemies at each other's throat 💕 Speaking of which, that scene in the anime where Gilbert pulls a beaten, bloody Roderich off the ground by the collar and calls a painter to portray him like that did things to me and I never recovered 🙏💗 My favorite scenarios for them are either Historical or Gakuen AU, but really this is one of the ships that I tend to like in most scenarios as long as their relationship dynamic is preserved the way it's supposed to be. I also like works that have a focus on a comparison between them and how that comes into play in their interactions.

🌸 GerAus: 5.5/10 - I don't really see chemistry between them in terms of ship, although I don't really mind it and as for most ships involving characters I like taken singularly, I can appreciate a good shippy fanart/fanfiction/doujinshi about them if it resonates with me <3 Anyways, I actually really like their interactions in canon, they make a funny duo. I also have a soft spot for Austria acting a little bit like a father figure to him, especially when he was younger.

🌸 AusIta: 7.5/10 - I can't help but feel very interested in the relationship between my favorite character and my assigned homeland™ 💕 Sooo, regardless of ship goggles, I do headcanon that Feli as a teen (around the mid 1700s-1800s before his Independence) had a bit of a puppy crush on Austria, and Austria probably noticed but I don't think he ever returned those feelings in any way, he was just very fond of Feli in a platonic and family-like sense. I am ON MY KNEES for Austria/Italy interactions!! 😭💕 Like isn't it a pretty big giveaway that Austria is very fond of his sort-of-kidnapped-ex-son that he allows Feli to hug him in Modern Days??? 💗 This said, I'm a multishipper at heart and I can and will also enjoy Ausita as a ship with mutual feelings as long as Austria isn't portrayed like an abusive asshole for the sake of it. My god how much I hate this canon-divergent take you have no idea 💀 He was just a bit of an asshole/bully when he was an overworked, overwhelmed, abused teen himself, it's so annoying when people carry that trait onto older Austria despite him having been nothing but nice to Feli later on 😭 Feli even willingly decides to stick with Roderich when given the opportunity to move in with Antonio and Romano during the War of Austrian Succession, and he literally clings on Roderich's clothes! And that is basically the canon thing that made me feel validated in my headcanon that he had a bit of a crush on Austria back then, besides that little strip where Feli blushes while Austria is fixing the ribbon around his collar 💕 Soooo basically my favorite scenario for Ausita is historical and Nationverse, towards the end of Feli's permanence at Roderich's house. I don't really think I'd enjoy it in any other scenario, tbh, it's hard for me to really care about it beyond the historical bond they have ... Maybe I could enjoy it in Modern Days too, but only in Nationverse as their history together and their relationship as Countries is the whole appeal AusIta has for me.

🌸 AmeAus: 6/10 - Saved this one for last because it's just a shameless, crack-y guilty pleasure I've somehow grown to enjoy in the last couple years despite the lack of content about it 😂 Dunno how it came to me (maybe it was because I noticed they're both 177cm, yeah my brain works in weird ways), but it did and I was like, "hey you know what, Austria and America would work as friends with benefits and strictly as that". And like!!! I still stand by it. Roderich would begrudgingly find himself attracted to Alfred for having some personality traits of Prussia and Spain and he's just weak for men who are a little silly and annoying. I think Alfred would also find Roderich attractive (I mean who doesn't?? 💀) and probably would like to take the 'prim and proper' act off his face in certain ways. Huhh, so yeah, because it's just a little guilty pleasure, I don't really care about the scenario or setting, I just like the idea of these two interacting and it somehow ending with no pants on 🙈
