CHAPTER ONE: 3815 Guadalupe #111: The Avenel
When I moved to Austin in September 1991, it was really with just one goal in mind: Get the hell out of St. Louis. I hadn’t lived in St. Louis for long. And though I’d made some good friends, there was also a lot of drama there that I needed to escape plus: SNOW. I hate snow.
One of my college roommates, Elaine, had moved the previous year to Austin from Florida, which she fled to try to outrun the ghost of her boyfriend, who’d died very suddenly and very tragically. She kept encouraging me to join her and finally I said why the hell not. I’d only been to Austin once before, for a couple of days, part of a truly wild road trip from Tallahassee to Vancouver Island and back Elaine and I took in 1988.
I was 27 years old when I got here. Henry was ten months old. We flew into the old airport and to this day I have such a fondness for the old air traffic control tower that the city had the good sense to preserve over in what is now Mueller. Big Red stayed behind to close up our shitty apartment in St. Louis and then drive down a few weeks later in the ancient land yacht Buick his grandmother had gifted us.
I had about $2,000 when I arrived-- half the money I earned when I was hired to rewrite the confusing pamphlet Tampax hands out to fifth grade girls to allegedly tell them about menstrual cycles, but really to get brand dedication going early. I was not allowed to mention pubic hair or, I think, bleeding. I was instructed to be as vague as possible, to the point that my friend Mike Prosperi suggested I title the tome: So-- You Wanna Wear a White Bikini?
I had no job lined up and no place to live lined up either. That might sound reckless but I thought I’d just figure it out as I went along. I’d shipped something like eighteen boxes to Elaine’s place, and most of those were full of books, many of which I’d later try to sell at Half-Price to come up with money for utility bills, but always winding up with just about enough for a cheap six-pack to help me forget the bills for a few hours.
Elaine lived in this shitty apartment complex called The Avenel. It had a big, ugly sign out front AVENEL that looked like a cross between a heavy metal band logo and the entrance marker for a water theme park. The manager told me the apartment next door was available. I don’t have receipts from back then, but I think it ran us maybe just under $400 per month and this included the fabulously crap brown carpeting and maybe a few pieces of furniture.
I have very few pictures from back then-- either because I was too broke for film, or too drunk to take pictures, or hell maybe there’s a pile up in my attic. Whatever the case, just as I have to guess at the rent, I also have to guess at the layout. I think there were two bedrooms. I know for sure one of them had ZERO windows. It was like Vegas where they keep the lighting dim always and no clocks so you never know what time it is.
I remember there was confusion back then. I actually hated Austin so much at first. I felt really isolated. There was much day drinking and MTV watching. Henry spent a ton of time furniture “walking” and jiggling to videos by Nirvana and Prince. Cream baby, get on top...
Big Red arrived and we both had a hard time finding work. He finally got a part time job on campus. I, having been entrepreneurial since elementary school when I peddled handmade beaded bracelets, googly-eyed pet rocks, and paper roses my Uncle Jack taught me to make, decided on a plan to earn money whilst staying home. Putting together my first initial and Big’s, I came up with S&M Ink. I believe our “logo” was bound hands. I made fliers and took them around campus, touting myself as a term paper tutor.
It wasn’t long at all before students came pouring in. They didn’t want tutoring. They just wanted papers written and typed by me. I way undercharged-- around $30 per paper. This was pre-Internet and business was good. I once wrote five papers for the same class and typed them all up on this crazy word processor that had very distinctive type, warning the students to have them retyped or else surely they’d be caught. I wrote a fabulous paper about women in Texas politics for some young guy who wasn’t from Texas and had no interest in the topic. I also wrote a autobiography about what it was like growing up Jewish, which was both challenging and fun. I think it got a better grade than the actual autobiography paper I wrote about my real life in eighth grade.
My biggest challenge was dumbing down these papers, trying to stay in the B range, lest red flags start flying. I’m a researcher and writer at heart though, so it was tough. (When I finally quit this work, students begged me, offered lots more money, and one kid said his father would pay for me to move to Chicago with him to help him get a masters-- this seems so unreal in hindsight, but I swear it happened.) 1991 was when Slacker came out, and I saw it at the Dobie Theater. This was a totally classic Austin experience, but that escaped me at the time. I didn’t “get” the movie. And it did take a while for me to “get” Austin. I would cry nights and beg Big to just pack up with me and head back to Missouri, even though I’d begged him to leave Missouri. But then Shipe Park happened. Being a newish mom in a new-to-me town, I wasn’t sure how to connect with others. Elaine and Big and I weren’t even exactly sure what to do with a baby. Elaine’s mom, a kindergarten teacher, pointed out to us-- duh-- go to parks. Shipe was the closest one, and I strolled over and there were all these moms who seemed to really have their shit together, their babies clothed, their diaper bags clean and snazzy, and little packets of healthy snacks. Henry hated clothes and would only ever agree to a diaper. That was fine by me.
One day I was pushing him in the bucket swing next to another baby and mom combo. We got to talking and discovered neither of us was married, both of us had our babies at home, and lo, they were the same exact age-- just hours apart. That was Grace and her baby was John Henry, and we marveled at all the similarities right down to the kids’ names and how they looked alike. We would go on to co-raise them, to this day they consider themselves brothers, and that first friendship swung the door wide open for me to meet many others.
Speaking of parks, Austin kids’ activities were fabulously dangerous back then. The slide at Zilker was a sharp, rusty, too-tall monstrosity that scared the piss out of me. There wasn’t yet that squishy dinosaur skin stuff to cushion falls off of monkey bars and swings. And the old Austin Children’s Museum-- was it downtown? -- in my memory was dark and dank. The year we got here, it featured as part of a Human Body exhibit a crawl-through colon made of corrugated tin. Henry bashed his head on it and got a massive goose egg. That was fun to explain to people-- Oh, that lump on his head? He got that working his way through a metal asshole!
Those were also the days you didn’t get the stink eye for toting your kid to a bar. I remember Henry sitting happily strapped into his carseat, snoozing at Lavaca Street Bar whilst Elaine and I enjoyed pitchers and fags. Better still, The Chuck E Cheese also had Busch on tap and-- I shit you not-- a smoking section. Seriously: GOOD. OLD. DAYS.
Henry’s first Austin show was Jonathan Richman at Liberty Lunch-- again, still in his carseat. I think maybe that was January 1992, right around the time we moved to our next Austin home, which I’ll tell you about soon.
THE AVENEL TODAY
The Avenel Apartments no longer has the groovy Heavy Metal Water Theme Park Sign. In fact now the apartments are “condos.” TCAD has #111 assessed at $160,371. It is 623 square feet and there is no yard. That’s $257.41 per square foot. I am hoping that the shit brown carpet and dirty linoleum has been replaced by now. The little pool in the “courtyard” is now a “patio”-- a patch of concrete with a table and a few chairs. Despite the absence of the old sign, as you can see, the building is still ugly as fuck.
