21. SKEGSS

Skegss is a completely FUNTASTIC surf/garage/punk band originally from Byron Bay, Australia. This radical trio consists of Toby Cregan on Bass Guitar/Vocals, Jonny Lani on Drums, and Ben Reed on Lead Vocals/Guitar.

Without a doubt - this band captures that awesome vibe between the beach and the streets. The band’s shaggy and care-free style reflects a certain level of excitement along with simplistic & insightful brilliance. The songs ranging from skateboards, to pizza and beer, to heartbreak, and navigating through life’s various lessons and self-discovery (while managing to maintain an understanding of the grander scope of life). Their laid-back demeanor mixed with absolutely catchy and melodic hooks and choruses that are a real treat for anyone who digs some good ol’ punk rock with a surf/garage flair.

Skegss manages to have a musical style that is just as authentic as it is ‘easy to get’ for those of whom have an appreciation for good waves & good sing-alongs. Underneath the band’s shaggy exterior - there is an underlying consciousness to the songs that allow the songs to have an artistic edge in terms of lyrical content - and at times just a damn good tune. Very few bands can write songs that could be about nothing and still manage to make you feel something (especially while having a lot of fun). I highly recommend checkin’ out their tunes - their videos are a lot of fun, too.

“New Toy” by Lene Lovich

Please please listen to how much better this song is than any other song you’ve heard today. I hope that’s a difficult feat, but even moreso, I hope this song totally wins your heart.

This is completely my favorite music video I’ve seen in a long time. Lene Lovich commands attention, it’s about that tangle of feelings you get when everyone’s up your butt and loves you too much, you know when that happens, and you’re this insecure wreck and also maybe a little selfish, and you need sometimes to just… be a person and just like do whatever you want. Take a tip from Lene Lovich, who I like to lovingly refer to as the goth Tiffany, deflecting those admirers with such frightening grace!
