"I've changed my mind," means NO.
Another piece in the YES | NO Consent zine, by the fabulous emmajeans (who actually got two pieces done in time!). This one always struck a chord with me and was very proud to see it in the zine.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
LAST MINUTE CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - DEADLINE Wednesday 19 March!
We're putting together a mini comic celebrating clear boundaries and we're taking submissions!
BACKGROUND:
Emma and I will be attending an event next weekend - it's a great event that celebrates local artists and small press. But it's named, very unfortunately, after a hideous rape-endorsing song Blurred Lines. This is not cool because this is rapey bullshit in our awesome art-making.
So to show where we stand, we're going to help unblur those lines. We're putting out a minicomic to show examples of what is and what isn't consent. And we'd love for you to join us.
The comic will be available at zine fairs and conventions, in exchange for a gold coin donation to the Domestic Violence Crisis Service ACT or Beryl Women. We anticipate making an electronic version of the comic available online for a pay-what-you-like donation to the same charities.
WHAT WE'RE DOING:
We're making a series of one page illustrations of examples that of NOT consent. Some ideas we've had are:
- cosplaying is not consent
- working at the comic shop is not consent
- saying "no" means no
- physically avoidance means no
- dressing "provocatively" is not consent
- life modelling is not consent
- having genitals is not consent
- being in a club is not consent
- dancing is not consent
You are more than welcome to use any one of these ideas, or to come up with your own.
(Please note - while this kind of violence is usually males targeting females, it is not always the case, and you are welcome to make any of the people on your page gender-ambiguous/neutral etc.)
SUBMISSIONS:
templates incoming! Currently, we are looking at A5 pages with a big line of simple text at the bottom, so for now please don't put anything important in the bottom 5cm of the page lest it get smothered in text.
SPECS: please submit all art 300 dpi (or higher), sized for a minimum of A5. You may submit colour images/text, however, the print version will be greyscale (the e-book will be colour).
We also want to keep the print version reasonably family friendly, so anyone can pick up the book and teach others all the good things about consent. We're sticking to a PG rating for the print version - if you're not sure if your idea fits into this, please run it by us first!
We will take illustration, one page comic and text submissions of up to 500 words. You may submit multiple times, but due to page constraints for printing, we may select one or two pages per person to publish in the print version - all appropriate submissions will be published on the e-book version!
All submissions need to be able to fit on one page. If you have a longer idea, please run it by us first.
You maintain all rights to your submission - sell it, make merchandise and prints out of it, put it on the web as soon as you're done with it (or before!). We only ask that you allow us to re-publish the image in this mini comic and on our website. We will credit and link back to you where we publish the image.
DEADLINE!:
This is an absolute last-minute call for submissions - to get this thing ready for the Sunday show, we will need all submissions FOR PRINT in by Wednesday 19 March
We feel strongly about this issue. We're going to be getting this comic out there and available for anyone who wants it on Sunday - but we'd love to have you join us for the ride.
CONTACTS
