Vans OG Authentic LX
Vault by Vans x Bodega Authentic ComfyCush LX 'Blank Tapes'
Few brands are able to really build a cult of personality around themselves like Vans can. Even fewer are able to create meaningful releases that are timely and thoughtful. Boston’s Bodega is one of the handful that is able to do both. Every Bodega collaboration, while often wild, is consistently thought out and presented in a way that makes it feel classic. Their newest collaboration with Vault by Vans is no different. Step into the ‘Blank Tapes’ Authentic ComfyCush LX and step back into the early 90’s where the VHS ruled and the skate tape came of age.
For the younger heads out there, you may not be aware of the impact the VHS tape, handheld camcorder, and the in-home VCR had on society and the subculture you are part of today. I can remember setting up my mom’s camcorder on a rickety DIY tripod and filmed myself kissing curbs (and falling. mostly falling) in our cul-de-sac in Virginia Beach in the late 80’s. I was the star of many a homemade music video made on that same camcorder well into my teens. We used to record Ren & Stimpy and send it to my Uncle (who didn’t have cable) in Tennessee because he liked it so much. Recording dozens, if not hundreds, of movies and TV shows at home so we could watch them countless times and taping ourselves doing stupid shit, or trying to nail that one trick over and over again (‘no footie, no trick’ was a common mantra) wasn’t just something we did, it was really integral to who we were—in many ways, who we are today.
via Bodega:
Vans and Bodega rekindle their collaborative relationship to pay tribute to endless creative possibilities and DIY spirit represented by VHS with the Blank Tapes capsule collection.
A custom designed, blank tape packaging style box, complete with adhesive labels (so you can tell your skate videos from the copy of The Day After that your parents recorded off of the TV) houses the eternally in-style Authentic silhouette. This fixture of skate culture has been programmed to record the VHS vision, with a suede/nylon upper adorned with blank VHS cassette labeling, and a translucent plastic tongue that recalls the cassette’s magnetic tape spool. The VHS labeling motif continues onto the shoe’s midsole, while the outsole the features an RGB color model. An extra detail for VHS connoisseurs is provided by the footbed, which sports a holographic Bodega print, in the style of anti-pirating security stickers.
VHS culture isn’t just about looking backwards though. It’s preserving the maverick energy committed to countless blank tapes for the contemporary world, rather than historical reenactment for its own sake. To that end, Vans have outfitted the classic style of the Authentic with, new ComfyCush foam. The additional arch support and one-piece interior bring a new dimension of comfort to the Authentic’s familiar exterior.
Naturally, no one who hops on the VHS train is ever likely to decide they’re all set with just the one tape, so a hoodie and long sleeve t-shirt bearing an RGB Bodega Vision logo on the front and anti-piracy warning on the back, and a blank VHS cassette packaging graphic skate deck round out the Blank Tapes collection. Because VHS is more than a chunk of plastic, it’s a state of mind.
The Vault by Vans x Bodega Authentic ComfyCush LX ‘Blank Tapes’ will be available this Saturday, 16 February, in-store at both the Boston and Los Angeles locations at 11am local time as well as online at 10 am EST. Be sure and check out the short Bodega produced for this release below.
Vault by Vans "Jungle Jacquard" Collection
This spring, Vault by Vans returns with a new collection of premium footwear, showcasing jacquard materializations to highlight classic Vans imagery. The stylized Vans silhouettes are fabricated into intricate, variegated weaves and patterns for an elevated take on the classics.
In this five-piece collection, the elaborate development process is featured on three Original Classics silhouettes - the Sk8-Hi, Old Skool and Authentic. Each pair in the Jacquard assortment incorporates a distinct jungle floral print and for the Authentic styles, it is combined with Vans’ iconic checkerboard print.
The jacquard weaving process is an intricate process in which all threads are pre-dyed to match Vans’ custom Pantone colors, hand-selected by the Vault by Vans designers. These strands are then threaded through hundreds of needles on a jacquard loom, which carefully weaves each upper to the finest detail. Each pattern is strategically designed and engineered as a one-piece upper creating a sleek rendition on the classic silhouettes.
The Vault by Vans "Jungle Jacquard" Collection retails from $75 to $90 USD and launches globally on May 27, 2017 at Sole Classics and other Vault stockists.
Vault by Vans x Alyx
America-based women's clothier Alyx started in California in 2015 and has risen to renown in fashion circles on the global scale. Founded by Been Trill co-founder Matthew Williams, the ready-to-wear styles have already been the root of collaborations with Fragment and are now the focus of a six-piece footwear collection from Vault by Vans.
We are treated to two of each style in the OG Authentic, OG Style 36, and OG Sk8 Hi LX silos. For the Authentics, we get simple colorways with natural white and black canvas uppers. The foxing tape features a throwback printed Alyx logo that is reminiscent of the ultra-classic Rad Authentics we are dying to get back.
The OG Style 36 LX arrive in similar colorways with natural white/true white leather and canvas uppers on one hand and black/true white on the other. Both pairs have contrasting stitching, pink laces, and pink flag tag. Additionally, they will feature a steel clip-eyelet on the second lacehole. A small, almost missed design feature of the shoe are the "CHAOS" printings on the heel counters. A nice touch to an already good looking shoe.
For the OG Sk8 Hi LX, we get black leather and canvas uppers sitting on your choice of the classic white or all black midsoles. Contrasting stitching, pink (and silver) laces and flag tag, and the same steel eyelet and "CHAOS" printing are also features on the Sk8 Hi. Additionally, we are treated to vintage-style Off the Wall embossed leather tongue labels in matching pink and silver hues.
The Vault by Vans x Alyx are available now, exclusively from Opening Ceremony during a pre-release event. Prices begin at $120 and end at $195. Keep an eye out for these to arrive at your local Vault stockist in the future.
Vault by Vans Goodhood "Equal | Opposite" Collection
London's Goodhood store opened its doors in 2007 with the intention of redefining what luxury living meant. Through the past decade, they have continually maintained their culturally relevant aesthetic and pushed the idea that effortless living and lux style can go hand in hand. They have become a major force in not only the London scene, but also around the globe. To celebrate this milestone year, Goodhood has partnered with Vault to create a three-piece footwear collection that takes inspiration from the mind of Sir Isaac Newton.
Inspired by Newton’s third law of physics which states that ‘for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’, the collection comprises three shoes: an OG Authentic LX and two OG Sk8 Hi LX. Something we don't normally see is both women and men being equally represented in a collection, but Goodhood intended to break that trend here. The OG Sk8 Hi LX will arrive in both black and white colorways with a white upper/black mid in women's sizing and the inverse colorblocking for men.
The OG Authentic LX is dressed in white canvas and suede, like the Sk8 Hi's, but will be available in full unisex size breaks. The pack features the Goodhood monogram and logo in repeat across not only the uppers, but also laces. It's clear that the crew at Goodhood and Vault wanted to leave no details out of this collection. Even the box is meticulously designed.
Goodhood's Director Kyle Stewart commented on the unique sizing that, "the project afforded us the opportunity to design product with a unique unisex mentality and the finished product represents our brand in it’s truest sense and treats both the men and women customers as complete equals.” Without getting too political, I think this is more relevant than ever these days and would love to see other companies take after Goodhood and Vault when designing their projects going forward. Stewart has set the bar for others and the ball is in their court.
The Vault by Vans Goodhood "Equal | Opposite" Collection will be available this Saturday, April 29th exclusively from Goodhood's flagship East London shop at 1030 AM BST as well as their online shop at noon BST. Pricing will be £80 ($103) and £90 ($116) respectively. Check out the spectacular video that Vans and Goodhood shot for the release below.
Vault by Vans Authentic LX Stingray Collection
Vans' premium line, Vault, has dabbled into exotics previously. We've seen country-western style pony hair as well as premium ostrich drape the well-known skate silos. For spring, Vault moves on to one another tier in the exotic leather market with the Stingray Collection.
Most people don't know that Vans doesn't source their animal skins from typical leather suppliers. The hides used on their shoes are almost always byproducts of the food industry. For these Authentics, Vans sent their buyers to Thailand with the US Fish and Wildlife Association to source the ray skin from farms. Vans paid for the selection, inspection, and certification of every skin before production began.
The Authentics will come in two colorways, burgundy and black. The uppers are monochromatic stingray leather with a matching. Each features a stripeless, white midsole and white diamond on the toe cap. The white "eye" is painted over the highest part of the stingray leather (over its back) and it used by tanneries to hide the wearing away of the natural caviar-like beads on the ray leather. The white dye will hide the raised areas bumps and scrapes that will surely happen over the lifetime of the product. These pairs are real gems, and because of the painstaking process to create them, only 250 of each color will be made available.
The Vault by Vans Authentic LX Stingray Collection will be available in-store only at select Vault by Vans retailers like BLENDS tomorrow, January 28th. Retail is $350.
