As a writer, there are numerous devices you can use to lend credibility to the fictional world you’re creating. I just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell the other day and was so blown away by the realness of its magic, of the (fictitious) culture and folklore from which it emanated, that I had to share my awe at it and at the ingenuity of Clarke’s footnotes.
