At the end of the string of bones was a skull. A human skull. Brittany's screaming never abated, and suddenly its meaning dawned on Lauren. Some sicko had wired up a bloodstained spine so it remained intact with the skull. Instead of all scattered slightly, as without muscles and ligaments to hold everything together bones were just kind of loose. So to be in one piece, like they were in Lauren's hands, someone would have had to wire them back into place.
Lauren looked up and saw that the rusty trusses of the warehouse were decorated with tens of them. Perhaps as many as fifty, if her visual guess was accurate.
"Huh." Lauren said, partially responding to her friend's staccato horrified shrieks, partially responding to the effort the person had put into the dusty warehouse's decor.
