i haven't watched all of miraculous ladybug so take this post with a grain of salt, but one theory i love is the headcanon of Adrien being autistic.

but not autistic as in "he's masking heavily as Adrien, but as Chat Noir he gets to be himself."

autistic as in "both Adrien and Chat Noir are him masking in different ways."

Adrien Agreste is Adrien masking as a perfect little rule follower, the type of autistic kid who doesn't get clocked as autistic by the adults around him because he overcompensates heavily, meaning people can't use him 'misbehaving' (in quotes because we all know I mean struggling, people are just jerks about autistic kids struggling) as a way to notice that he's autistic.

Chat Noir, on the other hand, is Adrien masking as 'the class clown' or 'the funny one.' it's like he's trying to be like a character from a show he likes, a character that's funny and confident who people love. Chat Noir is not Adrien's true self, Chat Noir is Adrien in a mask that isn't as restrictive as usual, but one that is still restrictive.

the 'Adrien Agreste' mask is restrictive in the way that he has to be very aware all the time. he has to keep his emotions in check, his movements in check, everything in check. every moment of real relaxation (especially if it's around someone with authority over him) is a risk.

the 'Chat Noir' mask is restrictive in the way that he feels the need to stick to the role he's chosen. sure, he can finally express joy and happiness in the ways he wants to, a major improvement from his usual mask, but his role as 'funny and supportive partner' can at times get in the way of him being a person as well. he might feel like he doesn't have the right to be upset about certain things because it's his role to be a good partner.

and he may not even know that a major part of this struggle is because he's masking something like autism, because he's been trained since day one to see his struggles as not mattering. considering how much of a dirtbag gabriel was, i doubt adrien even knows he's autistic.

i doubt the writers even intended for adrien to seem so autistic coded, so don't take me saying this as 'this is definitely the truth.' if it helps, just see this as an AU that i really love.

If you want to read an Autistic!Adrien fic, I HIGHLY recommend baconhorseicecream’s “Everybody Wants To Be A Cat”. It’s written by an autistic parent who has an autistic child, and you can tell that they know what they’re talking about, from how exhausted Adrien is from pretending to be “normal”, to his hope when he finds out there have been other kids like him, to his “episodes of emotion” and how he copes with those. It’s no wonder he pretends to be a cat, he gets a lot fewer questions that way and doesn’t have to expend energy acting “normal”.

He’s so good at playing the “perfect son” because he’s pretty much been forced to mask as “normal” for so long, even before Emilie’s disappearance, that it’s second nature. So when he’s Chat Noir, the masking falls away and he’s just f r e e

(Not to be confused with “I’m a totally different person behind the mask”, which is something I believe is bogus. It’s still Adrien, just an Adrien who doesn’t feel pressured to mask and appear “normal”)

The way he can shift between Adrien the Friend with his classmates, Adrien the Dutiful Son with his father, and Adrichat when he’s transformed. Although it’s more common in AFAB autistics because of how we’re socialised, it’s definitely a common autistic thing to “chameleon” and show different sides to different people. Not to trick them, but rather to show them what we think they want to see. I’m still the same person no matter who I interact with but the way I act around certain people can be hugely different if I’m trying to blend in, and that also ties back to masking

How he’s gotten a lot of his social knowledge from movies and shows. Part of this is because he’s been sheltered, yes, but the vibe I get from him is very similar to me, and I learned a lot of what I know about socialising from books and shows. So we both come across as odd but not odd, if that makes sense?

His rigid moral code and how he’s so convinced that his way is the right way. My annoyance with that stems from how the writers treat him like a perfect sunshine prince rather than letting him be wrong, but Adrien and I are very similar when it comes to rigidly believing that x is right and y is not and other people have to be wrong, maybe they should try it our way and see that we know what we’re talking about!

I can’t remember whether this is canon or just widely accepted fanon but: ring stim. Fiddling with his ring. I will always swear by this.

His special interest is anime. Come on, he literally did a Magical Girl pose the very first time he transformed.

We all call him a dense shit? That’s because he struggles with social cues. He can read people when it comes to politics and navigating the world of people wanting to use you for your connections because survival instincts, but stick him in front of ordinary people like his friends and he’s just the most oblivious dork ever. He didn’t notice at first that people weren’t having fun in ‘The Bubbler’ and he still doesn’t realise after literally everything they’ve been through that Marinette’s crushing hard on him.

How he has the absolute worst timing when it comes to jokes in akuma battles. Yes, it’s something he can work on, but we just seem to have...horrendous timing. My mum always jokes that I ask for hugs at the literal worst times (like when she’s holding a hot pan) because...I don’t realise???
