What is AUTOPTIC?
In late 2012, a group of Twin Cities based cartoonists and publishers began planning for what was to become AUTOPTIC's inaugural show the following year. Rather than creating “just another comics/ graphics festival”, we chose to take a giant step forward into the bigger, messier world of independent culture at large. To accomplish this we showcased not only cartoonists and zinesters, but also poster artists, printmakers, musicians, alternative & small labels, illustrators, designers, and more, ranging from the exclusively local to the internationally acclaimed. At its core, AUTOPTIC is a juried, expo-style show, but orbiting the expo are readings and talks, artist showcases, and music events, held at several sites across Minneapolis.
What’s in store for 2017?
For our third AUTOPTIC, we’re taking what we’ve learned from our first two festivals to explore how to further distinguish ourselves from the growing network of comic festivals across North America. Expect a greater focus on programming, on broadening our curatorial approach, on the inter-disciplinary components that’ve been at the core of what we’ve defined Autoptic as from day one, and increased collaboration with like-minded local festivals and institutions to truly make Autoptic part of the local independent cultural landscape.
In short, continuing to further our goal of taking the global and making it local.
Who will be at AUTOPTIC?
As we have done for our 2013 and 2015 shows, expect to see dozens upon dozens of artists from as close as your neighborhood to those crossing oceans to share their work and passion with YOU. New for 2017 will be an approach to curation that will leverage the broader local independent arts community to further AUTOPTIC’s goal of being a truly inter-disciplinary festival. More to come as this change comes into focus.
Where and When will AUTOPTIC happen?
AUTOPTIC will continue to be a two-day show with events leading up to the weekend of the festival, but as we begin to redefine what we want AUTOPTIC to be, the where and when are being kept under wraps. As always, it will remain free to the public.
Why AUTOPTIC?
We take our cue from the long, varied history of what might be called the underground, the counterculture, punk, and DIY; a world outside of demographics, advertising platforms, and major market concerns. AUTOPTIC is about people making culture happen in the real world from the bottom up, people who make things themselves, putting thought and care into seeing those things through and getting them out into the world however and wherever they can. AUTOPTIC is about feeding that impulse, and connecting those makers to each other and to a larger public.
