Crunching through orange, red, & yellow leaves on the sidewalk...watching the corn stalks, pumpkins, & scarecrows going up on the neighbors’ front porches...making a nest under the apple tree in the backyard with a blanket and a good book to read to dream and soak up the crisp autumn air, until it was time for a hearty dinner of butternut squash soup & apple cobbler.  These are my favorite memories of autumn.

The night was blue-black and brittle, a perfect late-fall evening.  The house was already decorated for Thanksgiving with swags of leaves, artful displays of gourds, and a wreath on the door made every year from the bittersweet growing beside the guesthouse in back.

“Outside, the dark air held the crisp tang of autumn.  A slice of moon hung overhead.  Far away, an owl cried out with a plaintive hoot.  Garlands of autumn leaves in scarlet, gold, and chestnut spilled off the eaves of the farmhouse.  Bushels of dried cornstalks framed the door.  Pumpkins and gourds were lined up along the sidewalk, the driveway, and the porch.  Some were carved into jack-o-lanterns, flickering candlelight in their spooky expressions.  Inside, haunted music played from the stereo.”
