Bachelorette Chat Session
I am actually really stoked for tonight’s episode of The Bachelorette! Let’s talk about the Bachelorette tonight during this week’s episode! Inbox me your thoughts/vents/comments all through the night! This is going to be fun!
Hey! How do you learn languages outside of school?
Hello, there lovely! I’m currently learning French in school; it’s actually my third year, but I had additional French learning when I was younger, so I’ve developed some strategies at learning a language in and outside of school. How I suggest learning a new language by yourself is by using these tips:
Find a workbook/coursebook/textbook online. By typing in, for example, ‘Italian I Workbook PDF,’ a bunch of links pop up! Currently, I am learning Italian by myself because languages to me are fun and easy to learn, so I downloaded one of the workbooks and then an additional exercise/homework workbook that way you can print off the sheets and work on them like you would for school. While writing and reading is everything to me, it’s not everything that the language has to offer, and it won’t help you speak it any better than before you opened the workbook!
Use free audio. I cannot stress this enough! It is one thing to be able to read in and write in a language, but it’s a whole other thing to be able to ACTUALLY SPEAK IT! Isn’t that why you wanted to learn the language in the first place because you liked how it sounded and you thought it would be amazing to be able to speak it! For all languages, sounds and pronunciation is different. You need to hear how they sound, not just know based off a comparison to the American sound. Listen online to hear how to pronounce certain words, make certain sounds, and overall speak it more fluently! I guarantee you this will make you a lot more comfortable and confident in speaking the language you are trying to learn rather than guessing how the words sound.
Drown yourself in the culture itself. I will watch movies, listen to music, watch Youtubers from that country (helps to pick up slang), write fake stories or letters, read books (like Italian Literature/French Literature)! It’s fun and entertaining! I just watched ”Joyeux Noel” and it had subtitles, but being able to hear how they speak in a fun way really helped! There’s tons of cultural, entertaining tools you can use to become a little more knowledgeable, so use them!
Incorporate it into your everyday life. I try to use it in my everyday life vy listing off things that I know how to say about my kitchen or bedroom; I’ll narrate what I’m doing and things like that. I’ll even talk to my cat in that language. It may sound stupid, but it gets you more comfortable in speaking the language. Sometimes I like to send texts to my friends in French (those who are in my French class) like: Sais-tu si nous avons les devoirs aujourd’hui? It just gets you accustom to using it!
Find people who speak the language! What a better way of learning a language than talking to people who actually speak it! I don’t know about you, but I have a few teachers that also have a major in French, so sometimes I’ll do their homework assignment in French as well as English.
I don’t know, those are the things I use to continue to grow in knowing a language outside of school because it’s not just about knowing vocab and grammar, and most schools don’t have a language class that is just in depth with the history and culture of the language! I hope this helps! Happy learning! xo
"Truly, nothing helps rape survivors of all gender, ethnicity, and economic level than the rich white girls walking around half naked while collaborating with the police. Because the cops are historically so good at supporting victims and catching rapists. Getting real tired of slut walk slogans too: don't slut shame me. How about do not refer to me as a slut ever. Real men don't rape? Oh shit, must have been a ghost then. Consent is sexy? Lingerie is sexy. Consent is a basic human right."
