Bo saw the vet yesterday, and the vet confirmed that he is suffering from a genetic condition called Fatal White Syndrome. He is blind, deaf, and does not have the usual number of teeth that other guinea pigs have. These, as well as possible gastro/intestinal issues are all symptoms of Fatal White Syndrome. A lot of Fatal White guinea pigs pass away shortly after weening, because they aren’t able to eat properly and/or sustain nutrition because of their dental deformities. Thankfully, Bo has one front tooth and he has molars, so there is some hope that will be able to eat on his own after weening. If they make it past weening, most Lethal White pigs’ teeth will grow in at strange angles and have to be trimmed often. We’re up for that challenge and we’re prepared for whatever care Bo needs for as long as he’s with us. For now, he continues to eat on his own (even trying out the hay and mushed up pellets he’s offered!) and he does all the normal baby piggy things his siblings do, aside from occasionally bumping into things and weeking loudly when he can’t find them. He is a special little dude and we’re totally in love with him! Bo, Blueberry and Butter Bean have another vet appointment coming up where we can confirm their genders (it’s hard to know for sure if guinea pig babies are boys or girls until they are about 3-4 weeks old.) We'll have another update for you then. Go Bo!
