Avalore Mythos: Borrum's Chorus/Cacophany
As mentioned in previous posts, there are six (ish) gods in the Pantheon for the kingdoms, and among them is Borrum, the god of Wind.
Borrum is the one god that is found with multiple contradictory depictions, because no one has any idea what he looks like. He has been portrayed as all kinds of species, in realistic and abstract forms, and any or all of them could be correct.
Borrum's origin story goes that, as both Gaia were constructing and deconstructing the lands, shaping what was to be the world that people would live in, that their opposite effects caused forces to push back and forth as energy was exchanged, taken, and reused. This was the first wind, and even when the Gaia stopped their work, finally satisfied, the winds stayed for their new job; to carry the lives of the newborn and the dead.
Borrum's role turned into a shared one of creation and destruction, inspired and ordered by Light and Dark Gaia. The wind would carry the life energy of the beings in the world, breathing into the newly born and then rushing away to suck the life out of the dying. This giant amalgamation of souls and life energy was personified into Borrum, the god of Wind.
It's believed that the newest souls, the ones of the newly dead, travel on the outside of the wind current, furthest from the center. They still have the thoughts and memories and identities of the departed, though eventually they make their way into the center, harmonizing with the rest and entering a state of serenity and understanding until it's time to be breathed back out from Borrum's mouth into a new being, ready to rediscover the world. It's also believed by many that the strongest souls will retain their identites the whole way through Borrum's being, and so reincarnation is possible.
Those who believe that Borrum chose a form of his own and separated himself from the life energy of the wind also think that he controls the direction of the wind, without being a part of itany longer. The wind in that case is known either as Borrum's Chorus or Borrum's Cacophany.
The kingdoms with Borrum as their patron god (Carhaix and Caerleon) have developed techniques that allow mortal beings to breathe the soul of the dying into their own bodies. Some have used it to keep the soul of the dying person alive a little longer before it fuses with the living being who took it, or to gain the wisdom of their elders. Others have used it as a way to revitalise themselves or in an attempt to prolong their lifespan. It is a very controversial technique that many have studied and argued for and against, regardless of where they live.
