Call me crazy but if this is true, for me it was pretty obvious his false sympathy. Idk like "he always made the effort to fit in the family and so, and the I made my big appearance and everything is so simple, maybe he sees me as a gold digger or he was in love with Ava (in my case) and now I take all away from him" scenario but he always gave me those vibes.
