A small flash of arcane blue light, followed by a soft echoing pop brought forth the vertically challenged familiar, Aveem. Appearing in the comfortably lit office that belonged to his mistress who was seated at her desk pouring over reports and letters of inquiry from those seeking work within the Consortium to be later passed up the chain of command for review, Aveem dodged a tome the whizzed by, finding its proper placement among one of the many book cases the lined the walls in a half-circle. The office was usually a busy place given Saedre’s magic that she used to delegate certain tasks to keep everything in its proper place; today seemed particularly busy as she had been bouncing back and forth between tasks - rummaging through her catalogues; an expert at multitasking who would never complain for staying busy kept her mind off things she didn’t want to think about.
Aveem carried some of Saedre’s mail and waited patiently with envelopes in hand for the sorceress to acknowledge him. He could have happily waited for hours, diligently completing any assigned task that was required of him. Finally, Saedre placed the scroll she had been reviewing down flatly upon the desk and turned her head to observe her familiar. A warm smile pressed upon her lips as she gently patted him on the head and retrieved her mail from him.
“Thank you, Aveem. Ever helpful as always,” Saedre said as she leaned back in her chair and began rifling through each piece of mail. Some were tossed aside and caught up in a swirl of arcane magic that took them to a specific bin - later to be reviewed, while others were placed upon her desk until one with a particularly familiar wax seal caught her eye. This one she kept in hand as she conjured the nearby letter opener to her hand and broke the seal.
“Now, whatever could Lady Winthrope need?” A long brow arched quizzically as she unfolded the letter. Compared to her late sister and first headmistress to the Violet Bastion that Saedre had overseen after her passing - her sister Neile’s penmanship wasn’t the neatest but at least it was legible. The woman never cared much for anything proper of her station outside of adventuring with her ragtag group of friends, so it was to be expected.
Aveem watched curiously at Saedre’s side, also wondering what was written within. He seemed to gain an extra burst of excitement in hearing the Winthrope name; how he adored the sisters. Bowing his head, he quietly pondered the late Koira Winthrope who had been dearly missed since her fall some years prior before turning his shimmering hues to Saedre, studying her expression as she read the letter. Expressions that shifted from curiosity, to the utmost concentration, to both brows drawn up in surprise - and then finally, a gentle sigh pushed past her lips as she straightened, hands folding with quiet grace atop the desk, the letter resting front and center.
“It seems Lady Winthrope is seeking to sell the estate and retire from status,” she finally said after what felt like an eternity of silence to Aveem who inched closer to Saedre, a clawed hand resting gently against the side of her chair. Unable to bite back a soft smirk that curled upon her lips, she exhaled sharply through her nostrils in humor, “I am honestly surprised it took her this long to do so. She never was one for that sort of station and when Koira was alive - well, Neile simply could do as she pleased while she handled the rest.”
Aveem blinked in surprise briefly before he’d nod his head in agreement. Finally, he pointed up to the desk where the letter was as if he were indicating he’d like to know more. It seemed a curiosity to the familiar that Neile had reached out with that news. After all, she could do as she pleased with her inheritance and it was of no business to them.
Saedre blinked, glancing down at Aveem, then let out a quiet chuckle at his curiosity. Her shoulders eased, posture softening, and her gaze drifted back to the letter once more as she began, “I suppose she didn’t want us to worry about her, but she has presented an opportunity I am unsure if I should consider or not.”
Aveem gently tugged on Saedre’s silken robe, imploring her to spill more information. Something was happening that seemed like it may shift the world around them, he could sense it, and he had to know more!
“Always one for a piping cup of tea, hm?” The sorceress grinned at her familiar. “Very well, I will stop dragging it out, Aveem. Lady Winthrope has offered the estate to me at a far lower value than what she would sell to the seeking public. I suppose… we could have a home all our own.”
Scratching his head, Aveem gestured around them as if in wonder as to what would happen to their relation here with the Consortium and being familiar faces on the property of the Raven’s Nest. Saedre could read her familiar well - such was the bond they shared after some millennia together. Very gently, the sorceress leaned over and patted his head once more in reassurance.
“Do not fret. Nothing will change here,” she chuckled again, but there was a hidden uncertainty behind her gaze as she pondered returning to the estate. A place that held so many memories for her in the short time she headed operations of the Violet Bastion after the loss of its former headmistress. Aveem tilted his head in observation of that subtle shift in her gaze.
“While I can never say never, Aveem - I assure you that our work here with the Consortium is not only lucrative, but important. I dare say I am finally beginning to warm up to our colleagues more than I let on but you keep that between us,” she kept speaking as she sat upright again, fingers deftly lifting the letter from the desk, her silvery hues sweeping over its contents once more.
“I have much to consider, but I would be lying to myself if I said it wouldn’t be nice to have a home of our own. Something more permanent and well… ours,” her gaze flicked briefly to the closed door of her office, then back again, watching a scroll move across the room to its proper resting place on another shelf. “Perhaps a portal network between the Raven’s Nest and the estate property in Elwynn could be effective. Given it isn’t too large of a distance, the network shouldn’t require much to maintain. Of course, I will need to speak with Shalla’Serra Ti’Vanelle first.”
“I don’t know. What do you think Aveem? Would you enjoy returning to the Winthrope Estate and making it permanent… our very own? I know the location isn’t quite ideal given the vast cultural difference here is in contrast to our own, but nothing is truly ever perfect.”
Aveem pondered for a moment. His shining hues peering about the lively office. He knew it didn’t truly matter in the long run what his opinion was. He was here to serve, but even he seemed to indulge in the idea. There was a creative opportunity here he found irresistible. Finally, he looked back to Saedre and nodded.
“Do me a favor,” she started, already penning a small letter back to Neile Winthrope. She was swift in a response that did not give an answer yet, but rather asked for a small period of time to consider the opportunity and that she was honored to be presented with it. “Deliver this response to her estate and try to gather an estimate as to how long she needs to have an answer as our coffers are not quite where I’d like them to be just yet.”
The familiar nodded, taking the letter he was just given and gave a flourishing bow. He was off, but not before a teasing remark came from Saedre’s lips that made him stop dead in his tracks, “You could even offer her a plushie from your vast collection as a gesture of good faith.”
Aveem looked at Saedre in shock. How dare she consider the notion! He snapped his head back and forth as a firm no. There were some things that were off limits for his mistress to consider even from him!
Laughter spilled from Saedre’s lips, unstoppable, at his response, she knew perfectly well she’d been teasing. With a light wave to dismiss Aveem, she wiped at the tears that laughter had brought to her eyes. “Oh Aveem, I would never ask that of you. Now go, go. I will await your return.”
And just as quickly as the familiar appeared within the office the way he had come, Aveem had vanished in the same fashion as well, a look of relief on his features before he completely vanished. Anything but his plushies. They were not the subject of jest. Hmph!
