               SHE LIVED, IN his mind, somewhere between absolute vexation and the persistent challenge to be better. ( he liked the feeling, whatever it was ; it made him feel awake ) Still... every molecule which wasn’t preoccupied with admiration for Anne was distracted with stubborn pride, and he chose what had often been the most vexing for Anne in return. It was hard to predict how she would react to ANYTHING, but Gilbert had, he thought, gotten better at the predicting of it. “For that to be true, you’d need to have already been ahead.” A mild tone felt appropriate and almost THEATRICAL in its subtlety. Gilbert, proud of himself for a volley well volleyed, dared a glance up at Anne ( fiery anne, challenging anne, vexing anne ) and gave a smile of his own. “What am I beating you in today?”

“ i . . .  of course, i have a plan!  well . . .  half of a plan. ”    he and violet think together by now, so without her?  he only feels like half himself, and he certainly can’t pretend to come up with more than half a plan without his sister.  he looks around, trying to think like violet, at least;  that trick has worked before with some success on both their ends.    “ think, think, think . . . ”

“ that’s . . .  very kind of you. ”    he wants to smile  —  knows that’s really what he should do in such a moment as this  —  but he can only really stare at anne in disbelief.    “ you know i’d do whatever i could for you, too  —  don’t you, anne? ”    pate is not used to having his friends, but this he knows he can promise her.
