So a while back while listening to @foolandscholar 's The White Vault AVRUM, I took notes and just now went back to actually take screenshots of a map exploring their route.

(Note that region names are written how they appeared in the transcript first, then how they appear on Google maps now)

Avrum et al start in a town near Nemirov/Nemyriv, which is in western Ukraine. Then they move south to Tulchin/Tul'chyn. After that they turn west towards Satanov/Sataniv. So, roughly, we can see their route here:

First is the route between Nemyriv to Tul'chyn, second picture includes Sataniv, and third zooms out and shows just Tul'chyn to Sataniv (since the first leg of the journey is basically blocked this far zoomed out).

Now we can also look at where Rivka and the others are from and just how far they travelled to get to where they met Avrum, and how far they would have to go to return.

Rivka's Family speaks Abkhaz, which Google says is spoken in Abkhazia, which is a coastal region in Georgia. This lines up with Avrum pointing out the other's Georgian accent, that they're "from the east" and "across the black sea" and live in the "eastern mountains". So we can pinpoint them to the western section of this mountain range in Georgia:

Yellow is the Abkhazia region and pink is the mountain range.

Now zoom out and we can see Nemyriv, Ukraine as compared to Abkhazia / Mt. Elbrus

Anyway I love maps so hopefully you enjoyed this little ride we went on.

y’all i am so locked in i’ve barely taken any notes!! this is SO good oh my gosh. i honestly think it’s the best one yet.

ok so — i like Rivka, such a sweet little girl! Avrum has my whole heart and soul. Usher is sweet! very much an awkward teenager, but he means well. Zelig is kind, stern, but kind. a good leader so far.

wait. wait. ok so this is a HUGE stretch. like i’m reaching so far. but Usher’s venomous reaction with Avrum finding Rivka’s “doll”…the fact that he, Rivka, and Zelig are from “over the eastern mountains”…are THEY part of the people that worship the Things?

“She gets really…loud…without it.”

“Like back at the house when I met her. Cossacks riding through the streets and she’s calling out for Tzeitzl.” HA. oh i LIKE Avrum.

“Oh no Avrum, you do not want to hear me sing. Even in a whisper.” hmmm…Usher said that “jokingly” but…there was just…something in his tone. i could be reading more into it than usual.

and now a storm is coming. well, they’re at that stage.

Avrum is so sweet!! but why did the lines “We can eat something and watch the shadows grow. We’ll keep walking west, and as the shadows stretch, you can guess what they will be.” fill me with such dread? foreshadowing? (no pun intended…again)

WELL SHIT. OK SO UM. A DEAD COSSACK STRUNG UP IN A TREE AND NOT EATEN. THAT IS…NOT GOOD. :)

Usher and Zelig’s lack of reaction to the dead Cossack…the people traveling with them “wanting to have little to do with them”…idk. it’s just reminding me SO MUCH of the people’s reactions to the Jesuit priests in Imperial.

they’re part of those peoples i am SURE OF IT. i’m officially submitting that as my theory as of this moment.

“Oh really? And I don’t get a say in this?” ok so even if they are of those peoples, at least Zelig is a good father.

hmm…so Zelig is an unpopular leader but those following him can’t go back without him? so, i wonder if he was part of some kind of, like, head family of their particular branch of those peoples, so without Zelig present, the others can’t return to their sacred home without being killed by those Things?

they’re heading towards the mountains? Avrum dreaming of the man from the tree? him feeling uncomfortable? VERY NOT GOOD.

“We have stories back home, of things in the forests.” “…My mother says that the forests are fine.” “Sure. Maybe she would tell you that.” OK SO THAT IS WORSE.

i’m telling you, they HAVE to be from these leader families, just like the Documentarian is. hence the “doll” Rivka has, and why she doesn’t fear the Things

OK THE DETAILS ABOUT WHERE RIVKA AND USHER USED TO LIVE?? them saying that it was a prosperous place, and how they used to sit and tell stories, and how the village below their mountain “just disappeared”?? WHAT IF!!! what if they’re a part of those peoples and they LEFT because they didn’t want to sacrifice people anymore?? just like how the Documentarian’s father left her mother and how Essie died after she left, presumably because she disagreed with killing people?? even in Imperial it mentioned how some of the people were afraid and saddened?? LIKE??

and that’s why the others don’t like Rivka and her family, because they were part of those leader families.

shit’s happening!! some of the others are going back. the way Usher says “Scared enough to go back to that?” just confirms everything i’ve suspected.

“Wait…something is wrong.” FUCK.

Y’ALL I AM SHRIEKING??? the Cossacks finding them — “We will not be pulled into those waters!” WHICH MEANS ITS A THING — and then being slaughtered?? fuck is Zelig dead?? if he’s of a leader family then he’s safe right?? BUT IF HE LEFT THE PROTECTION OF THE THINGS THEN HE’S NOT?? SHE LOST HER DOLL — DID IT COME ALIVE TO PROTECT HER???

Zelig is dead, FUCK.

“their bodies opened” MM NOT GOOD.

“Take it back.” WHY is Usher so insistent? so, Rivka seems to be the only safe one…is she still under the protection of the Things, and saying that will call them? will they somehow bring her home?

wait. “Children of the Light”. ok i am MASSIVELY reaching here. like i’m practically Elastigirl with this reach. but remember how Rosa disappeared from Svalbard in a flash of light and appeared in Patagonia? she was dead, and she crumbled into dust…but since Rivka is a child, and is under the protection of the Things, is she safe and can she use the portal thing that they do without dying?

if i’m right i will actually scream.

IS USHER TRYING TO WARN AVRUM AWAY SO HE DOESN’T DIE?? I THINK HE IS!!!

“We should say it now.” WHAT DOES THAT MEEEAAAAN. is she talking about calling the Things? repenting in some way, so they could go home?

OH SHIT the Things found them!!

is she calling Them? is Rivka’s distress calling Them?? is that why They keep finding them? Usher kept saying to keep her calm the entire time Avrum was with them. i think that any time she is distressed, the Things are called.

wait. is the doll a Thing, like Sveiða, and so when Rivka is distressed, it comes to life and kills whoever upsets her? is that why the Thing left when it got close to the tree where Usher, Avrum, and Rivka were hiding the first time?

“I caught no glimpse of it.” he didn’t see it so it didn’t see him…but because he’s favored by Rivka, did the Thing not show itself to him so he wouldn’t be killed?

“My brother always comes back.” IT’S GOTTA BE ONE OF THOSE CHARMS.

Rivka’s lack of concern about Usher and the others…that’s the coldness that we see in Mor.

and how she keeps finding food? she always seems to find food now? is it because she’s fully under the protection of the creatures now?

wait, Zelig stole Rivka away? Rivka doesn’t get to see him often? WAIT. is the leader of the families matriarchal? that’s why in Imperial the priestess was a woman, and Hulda and Mor are the CEOs of their “companies”??

“If Rivka says it, it will be true.” SHE IS ONE OF THE LEADER FAMILIES AND I GUARANTEE ITS MATRIARCHAL. and her devotion to Avrum…i hope it keeps him safe there. please let him be safe.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe) "Love starts on a downbeat. Love starts when the music starts. Love starts when the tune is sweet and you lift your feet to the beat of your heart." Avrum is warm and friendly, choosing to be open and positive about his emotions both sweet and bitter. When he reveals that his wife died, instead of becoming upset he uses the opportunity to share the love he found in "The Beat of Your Heart." He is able to find companionship and understanding through this song, bringing all of the men in the house to celebrate the past together. He welcomes the members of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Band into the home, trying to spark conversation. Even though Iris and Itzik are in the midst of tense spot, he remains open and tries to keep spirits up among everyone.

Introverted Sensing (Si) "Sometimes it feels like we're moving in a circle, around and around with the same scenery going by. But no one's complaining, we're experts at waiting..." Avrum finds comfort and stability from the past, seeing it as both a driving and grounding force in his life. He remembers every detail of the time when he first met and fell in love with his wife, down to the ribbons in her hair. He acknowledges a sense of sentimentality, especially about such an important and emotionally charged moment in his life. In "Waiting," he seems content with the notion of moving in circles, even if he can feel a desire to move to something new. He's willing to find the good in things that stay the same, and willing to find excitement in possibilities and newness (Ne).

Extroverted Intuition (Ne) "Violin. I play in wedding, bar mitzvahs. All songs, Beatles, Rolling Stone. Klezmer. It's how I meet my wife. Iris mother." Avrum is both energetic and excitable, showing enthusiasm when new opportunities turn up in his life. He often repeats "wow!" after discovering some new fact about the members of the Alexandria Police Band, externalizing the excitement he feels. He does not seem phased by their presence and how it could threaten the status quo, but welcomes it as a source of new ideas. Back when he was in a band, he played all kinds of music, and was open to all kinds of experiences. He took a chance when it came to first connecting with the girl who would one day become his wife, even though she had come with someone else.

Introverted Thinking (Ti) "So maybe I'm romantic. Maybe I'm a sentimental fool." Avrum tends to be more focused on keeping harmony present than confronting and analyzing problems at hand. Though there is a deep tension between his daughter Iris and her husband Itzik, he never directly confronts the issue until it explodes. He is aware of some sense of conflict, taking care to comfort Iris, but chooses to divert energy from the problem rather than solve it. He focuses deeply on the memory of his wife in an emotional sense, deliberately choosing to lean into the feelings of the music. He acknowledges that he may be looking through the past through rose-colored lenses, but at the same time doesn't seem to mind if he's letting things become so sentimental (Si).
