Dark Hunters: Nevermore
In the early days of our world, according to ancient records, the skies were dotted with winged figures, powerful fliers who kept a watchful eye over every island. They made their home in a tall, unclimbable mountain on the Southern Continent called the Spire. It is unknown how these figures, the Avyx, carried out the Great Spirit’s will. What is clear is that, not long into our world’s voyage through the galactic universe, the Spire toppled from the skies, taking almost every Avyx with it. Centuries of autopsies on winged corpses have revealed no answers.
I was lucky enough to recruit one of the few surviving Avyx: a black-winged, duplicitously inclined specimen, who took the name “Nevermore”. What this poetic name was meant to indicate, I was never sure, nor did I care. What mattered was that Nevermore excelled at scouting, tracking, and, depending on the conditions, burgling – few guards ever expected a thief to approach from above.
Unfortunately (for him), Nevermore became... careless... in the execution of his duties. On several burglary missions, he saw fit to make an extra profit by selling information on his quarry to local thieves. While these hapless burglars threw themselves into battle with the artifact’s guards, Nevermore would swoop in and snatch the artifact, leaving both sides none the wiser. This hobby paid big dividends to Nevermore, and I was none the wiser... or so he thought. In reality, I was merely waiting for him to make a trade with the wrong thief... and soon enough, he did.
I assigned Nevermore to steal the Makoki Stone from a glacial Toa Tower. He decided a pair of Skakdi thieves, Hakann and Vezok, would be better suited to the task. Banking on their incompetence, and preferring not to go out in the gale-force winds, he enjoyed another night in town. All the while, Hakann and Vezok were sailing through Frostelus-infested waters, scaling the Toa Tower, and making off with the stone. They might have gotten away with it, too, if I hadn’t assigned Ancient to track Nevermore’s every move. I was disappointed to give up such a useful operative, but by this time, he had robbed the Dark Hunters of a hundred missions’ worth of profits. Quoth the Shadowed One... nevermore.
POWERS: Nevermore’s natural physiology was a gift from the Great Spirit. In addition to his arms and legs, he boasted a set of large, powerful wings, with which he could fly for days on end. His eyes were adapted for extreme telescopic vision, allowing her to see the movement of a Matoran on a continent from 20,000 leagues up. The sacrifice of his flight-capable design was that his body was very light and fragile, making him highly vulnerable to physical attack. For this reason, I always assigned Nevermore to stealth missions.
STATUS: Dead. For his transgressions against the Dark Hunters, and to inspire fear in my new Skakdi recruits, I executed Nevermore in front of them on their first day on Odina. Evidently, my example didn’t sink in, as they would later rise against me in a would-be coup, and after that abandon the organization to go treasure hunting. I suppose some Piraka never learn.
