Evolution of Main Plaza - San Antonio, Texas

Main Plaza in San Antonio has a long, beautiful, and occasionally violent history. As a part of the city's original plan, it was like many Spanish towns in Europe: the main cathedral of the town facing an open community space. For hundreds of years locals gathered here to sell homemade products, livestock, and food. Chilli as a dish was invented right here, and many nights the famous Chilli Queens of San Antonio de Bexar would sell their products here, filling the nights with smells of cooking meat and stews, much to the delight of many travelers.

The city of San Antonio eventually changed it from a plaza to a park, having roads cross through. It attracted criminals and the homeless, showing a sad remnant of San Antonio's once vibrant past. Yet in the past ten years, the city has restored the plaza. It is now the source of community activity, art and lighting shows, worship, music, shops and more.

The Spanish believed that open community space was essentially for building a strong, vibrant, and close community. The restoration of the plaza and the outpouring of support from so many has pushed forward once again the famous small-town feel of such a large city. As it turns it, the Spanish were probably right.
