Rare footage of uncontacted tribe highlights threat to Amazon forest

The footage was filmed by a member of a neighbouring tribal group campaigning to protect the region's isolated indigenous people.

Rare video of uncontacted members of Brazil's Awa Amazon tribe has emerged, as activists warn of growing threats to this tribe from loggers who are nearing their traditional hunting ground.

The footage was taken in the northern state of Maranhao and shows a man holding a large knife in the rainforest.

He holds up the blade to his face before looking towards the person filming him.

The footage was taken by Flay Guajajara, a member of the nearby Guajajara tribe, another tribal group from the Amazon which has campaigned to protect the isolated indigenous people of the region.

He says the destruction of the Amazon is a "reality" and the consequences are "very serious".

In January 2014, the Brazilian government sent the army into a corner of the Amazon, backed by bulldozers and helicopters, to clear out hundreds of families living illegally on a reserve for indigenous people. The three-month offensive was aimed at saving what has been called the world’s most endangered tribe – the Awá – from extinction. It was Brazil’s biggest operation of its kind and was hailed by activists.

New Project : EXPOSED TRIBE

To create a hypothetical future where the Awá tribe currently located in the rainforest in Brazil, have been forced to extinction due to the severe effects of deforestation.

There are 370 million indigenous people worldwide, 150 million of these are tribal. There are currently 32 endangered tribes and the most threatened of them all is the Awá. The tribe resides in the eastern Amazon forests of Brazil, there are thought to be approximately 300 members left, 100 of these have never had contact with the outside world. The forests that are the home to the Awá are vanishing faster than any other indigenous area in Brazil. This is due to deforestation caused by illegal loggers and ranchers.

It is important to communicate just how heavily these hunter-gatherers rely on the forest. Everything that the tribe relies on for survival comes from the forest, without the forest the Awá will no longer be able to sustain themselves.

The definitive identity that tribes around the world have is something that I believe is missing from many countries, that strong sense of identity and celebration of traditions and the feeling of belonging within a culture. With that being said, it is now more than ever so important to protect and save these unique cultures, hence the Awá Exposed Tribe project.
