In New Zealand, a private beach inside Abel Tasman National Park went up for sale in 2016. Two locals helped start a crowdfunding campaign. More than 39,200 people chipped in over $2.2 million, bought Awaroa Beach, and gifted it back as public national park land.

Yesterday, we hiked a few kilometers of a trail through Awaroa/Godley Head Park near Christchurch. The skies cleared as we hiked along the cliffs looking out to nothing but Pacific. The sunlight turned the water gemstone-teal before we turned inland to walk uphill amongst the sheep back to the car.
