A Need to Write
So, this one is a little different. I took the challenge on as soon as I saw it but it’s taken me a long time to write mostly because I’m not really used to writing myself into fics (it’s kind of hilarious).
This was for @mrswhozeewhatsis Not an April Fool’s Joke Challenge and was an absolute blast to write, so I hope you guys enjoy.
Words: 8552 (Sorry)
I was running late, why was I always running late?
Scowling at myself, I hurried out the door, hearing the buzzer go as I waited for the lift. I glanced back at the door, but figured it was only going to be a parcel arriving. I didn't have time to do that.
My foot tapped impatiently in the lift, wishing, not for the first time, that it moved quicker.
Hurrying out the doors, I almost run straight into the two men standing at the buzzer.
“Sorry!” I said quickly as I bumped one in the shoulder, hurrying away.
I missed the words said between them. “Emma?”
I paused, glancing back with a frown at the two of them, something oddly familiar about them. “Do I know you?”
“We were wondering if you could help us,” The taller one said. “I'm Sam, and this is my brother Dean.”
I stared between them, knowing that this would look odd to anyone passing by, but for that moment my mind didn't want to work, the impossible suddenly in front of me. “Winchester?”
“Oh good, she's read the books or seen the show.” Dean grumbles.
Sam gives him a look. “We get it, this is going to be confusing-”
“Wow, I really don’t have time for this.” I looked at my watch. “Look guys, I get it, you’re being funny, but seriously, I’m late for work.”
I turned away, even as they called back after me, but my headphones went in, drowning them out quickly as I disappeared around the corner.
Unfortunately for me, the incident wasn’t far from my mind all morning, distracting me from my work, my mind working over why someone would possibly think doing something like that would be funny.
By the time lunch came around, I was near desperate to get out of the office, heading out to the nearest café to grab some food.
I froze, staring at the two men sitting at the café, and went to turn on my heel to walk away when Sam looked up.
“Emma!” He scrambled up and I took a step back.
“Now wait just a minute.” I said, a little loudly. “Did you guys follow me here?”
It earned a few looks, Sam clearly realising this and holding up his hands apologetically. “We just want to talk. Please.”
My heart hammered as I stared at him and then back over at Dean, who was watching. “I said I wasn’t interested in the joke guys.”
“It’s not a joke.” Sam said gently. “Please, come over and we can explain.”
I swallowed, and was about to deny him again when another familiar figure sat down with Dean, placing three coffee’s on the table. Two was strange, but three of them...three of them was something else.
Castiel looked over to the two of you, quickly saying something to Dean, who shook his head.
“We just want to talk, that's all.” Sam said, still waiting for me to do something.
Hesitantly, against my better judgment, I nodded, Sam smiling before leading me over.
I sat uncomfortably in a chair, looking between the three men. “You guys know how strange this is right?”
“Oh, so you believe us now?” Dean asked.
My gaze went over to Castiel for a moment, before returning to Dean. “No, but you've certainly got my curiosity enough. Care to tell me the truth about what's going on?”
“You haven't told her?” Castiel asked with a frown.
“Like we've had a chance Cas,” Dean said. “We told you, she hardly stopped to chat this morning.”
“I was late for work.” I said irritably. “And as far as I'm still concerned, this is just some weird joke.” I shook my head. “I mean, you guys are half way around the world-“
“Tell me about it,” Dean grumbles. “We've been looked at funny a few times.”
“I'm not even going to ask what you did, we're not some backwards country.” I looked at them and closed my eyes for a moment, rubbing my eyes. “This is insane. I must have finally lost my mind.”
“Afraid not.” Dean said. “We're here and asking for your help.”
I laughed, I couldn't help it. “My help? What could you possibly need my help for? I'm a nobody.”
“You are somebody,” Sam said. “Even the angels recognise that, that's how we found you.”
This made my head reel, it was bad enough that three, technically fictional people were sitting in front of me, but now I had to accept that everything in the show was real too. A part of me had always wanted that, but actually hearing it was something else.
I felt a headache coming on.
I sighed, rubbing head then checking my watch. “Okay. This a lot, but okay. I have to go back to work. If you guys are serious about this, there's a cafe downstairs from me. Meet me there.”
“But-“
“You've got to go to work, we get it.” Sam said quickly, over Castiel who looked concerned.
It almost made me sit back down, instead I pulled a pen out of my pocket and grabbed a napkin, writing my number on it. “If you need it.”
I walked away before I could even think about what I just did, sitting down with three strangers and giving them my number.
Were they strangers though? I shook the thought away. Whether I watched the show or not, they were still strangers.
And I just agreed to meet them for coffee.
The rest of the afternoon went slowly, a buzz of anxiety around me, but no one seemed to notice, everyone too concerned with it being Friday.
I barely even registered the walk home, soon finding myself throwing down my work bag and getting changed into more comfortable clothes.
My phone buzzed. We're downstairs whenever you're ready.
I stared at the message. I could still get out of this if I wanted, but then, knowing the show, no one ever just got out.
Taking a breath, I bit the bullet.
Sure enough, they were there waiting, talking at a table, looking overly serious. I wasn't sure why, but the normalcy struck me more than anything else.
I sat next to Sam, nervousness still bubbling away, and I quickly bit down all the other feelings coming with it.
“Hey,” Sam said with a warm smile. “How was the rest of work?”
“Don't ask.” I grumbled. “It's been a long week and now this isn't helping.” I held up my hand as Dean went to argue. “It's a shock Dean, whether you want to admit it or not. You guys aren't meant to exist. This is like-” I stopped, having no words, so I shook my head. “Whatever. Why have you sought me out?”
There was an odd silence, Castiel was the first one who spoke.
“Because you're good at reading.” He said slowly and I raised my eyebrow, staring at him.
“So are millions of other people.” I said, earning a chuckle from Sam and Dean.
“What Cas means, is that you're good at picking up plot points in things.” Sam explained. “You can tell the end before the end.”
“Sometimes.” I said slowly. “It depends on how obvious it's written. Lots of people can do this.”
“You do it naturally though, without thinking.” Dean said. “Comes as easy as breathing to you.”
“Well...” I didn't want to agree, it was a rather odd skill to have, but more than one person had commented on it. “Say I do, how do you guys come into play?”
“Well that's our problem,” Sam said and pulled out a usb. “Somehow, this has been doing the rounds between writers, who then all end up dead, and the words ‘You're not good enough' left behind.”
My eyes widened. “And you want me to look at it?”
“Just read it.” Dean said. “We've read it ourselves and nothing happened.”
I stared at them. “So...you want me to read it and tell you how it ends?”
Castiel and Dean nod, Sam giving a sheepish grin. “Look, as far as we can tell, it's only those who try and write in it that gets affected. We're thinking that if we know the ending, that'll stop it.”
I blinked at them before shaking my head. “Man you guys get into some weird shit.” At that, the waiter walked over asking what you wanted. “Large hot chocolate please, extra hot, with a shot of bourbon.” I mumbled the last bit under my breath, the only one to hear me being Dean, who snickered.
“This still doesn't explain me,” I said as they walked away. “I'm no one.”
“Look kid, the fact is-” Dean stopped at my glare. “What?”
“I'm hardly a kid,” I said. “I'm 24, not that much younger than you.”
“Still a kid, but beside the point.” Dean grins. “We need your help, whether you like or not.”
My hands twisted under the table. This was a lot. “Well, I mean, I'll do what I can, but I'm not sure how much help I'll actually be.”
“We just need you to try,” Sam said calmly and pulled out his laptop, turning it on and opening the file to hand it to me.
I took and stared at the screen, quickly beginning to read without really thinking about it, meaning I missed Dean's eye roll.
“Is it a geek thing?” He asked.
“Dean, when you get something you love in front of you, you hardly just sit back and wait do you?” I asked without looking up. “I love stories, so yeah, I'm going to start reading straight away. Plus,” I glance up at him. “Also not wise to question the girl that's helping you.”
Castiel grins and Sam hits Dean's arm as I go back to reading. The drinks arrived and I hardly looked up as I kept reading, not listening to what they were saying.
That was until I felt the strain starting on my eyes. “Shit.”
“What?”
I rubbed my eyes and blinked a few times. “I need my glasses,” I then stared at Sam’s screen for a moment. “And preferably my own screen.”
“Well go get them, you only live upstairs.” Dean said.
I shook my head and closed the laptop. “My laptop is way too bulky and doesn't run without power for very long anymore. I can get this read through tonight.”
“We can't just leave you alone with it.” Dean said firmly. “I'm sure you can understand why.”
I nodded. “Of course, the issue is...” I didn't know whether to say it or not, but as if on cue, my phone buzzed. “Oh, well, if you want to wait about twenty minutes...”
“Your parents going out?”
I sighed. Of course they knew. “Yeah, and I would much prefer to keep them out of it. They don't watch the show often, but they still know about it.”
“So many people watch the damned show.” Dean mutters.
“You should be grateful you aren't recognised more often then.” I gave a small smile. “I'm pretty sure that'd freak the world out.”
“Us being real or everything else?” Sam asked, sharing your smile.
“Bit of both.”
“You're taking it rather calmly.” Castiel said and I nodded slowly, mostly to avoid his gaze.
“Yeah, well, I guess I've always had an inclining.” When his gaze didn't move I quickly changed the subject, frowning slightly. “How did you guys get here?”
None of them answered straight away, sharing looks between each other.
“What?”
“Crowley.” Dean said, looking annoyed and worried. “We didn't want to, but there wasn't too many other options.”
I stared at them. “Crowley got you here?”
“Yes.”
I wasn't overly sure how to take this.
“We've told him to stay away.” Sam said. “We know what he's like to deal with, we weren't about to introduce you, I mean we figured this would be a lot already.”
“Uh huh.” Bad topic change, so I checked my watch. “Alright, they should be gone.” I drained my cup and stood.
“Hang on, we should grab some food.” Dean said. “What’s there to eat around here?”
I went upstairs while they went to have a look. I took a moment to lean against my door, wondering, seriously, what the hell I was doing. I looked at the usb in my hand and swallowed.
By the time the buzzer went, I was well engrossed into the story and jumped a mile before huffing and getting up from my desk to answer.
The three of them walked in holding pizza.
“Gotta say, this smells fantastic.” Dean said, hurrying over to a lounge and wasting no time to sit down.
“I did tell you they were good.” I said nervously. “And, well, excuse the mess.”
“Hey, we aren’t worried about a bit of mess,” Dean said, digging straight into the pizza. “Homes are meant to be lived in right? Can’t expect them to clean.”
I grinned. “Uh huh, glad to see someone else shares my opinion then.”
“Is it just the three of you?” Sam asked, joining Dean.
“Yep.” I rocked a little nervously before I moved over the bean bag and sat down on it, running my hands through my hair. “Mum, Dad and I.”
“No siblings?”
I shake my head. “Nope. Just me. I’ve got two older cousins that are like brothers though.” A slow smile comes to me then. “They’d definitely flip out about this.”
“Fans too?” Dean asked.
I snort in amusement. “No, but they are religious.”
“Oh,” Dean pauses half way through a bite. “And you get along with them no problem?”
“Of course,” I took the pizza box as Sam offered it to me. “Just because they’re religious doesn’t mean we don’t get along. We’re still into similar things, especially gaming, and I assure you, it works out fine.”
“Forgive me if I don’t believe you.” Dean said. “Our experiences speak a little differently.”
I shrug. “Each to their own.”
It was odd, but the four of us sat and had a conversation, and again, the normalcy struck me.
I guess I could really consider them as normal people.
“So how's the reading going?” Dean asked.
“It's reading, it's not difficult.” I said. “But it's a hell of a story, I'll give them that.”
“Do you think bits are missing?” Sam asked.
I nodded slowly. “I was going to ask about that.”
“Your guess is as good as ours.” Dean shrugged. “But it still makes some sense.”
“Yeah, but I'd feel better without missing bits,” I paused. “And without the bad grammar.”
“Don't correct it,” Castiel said quickly. “We can't be sure that it won't trigger it.”
“I figured.” I got up. “Guess I better keep reading then, I'm sure you guys want some answers.”
I had just sat in my chair back in my room when Castiel's voice made me jump.
“Why have you got an angel blade?”
I spun, having not expected to be followed, to see Castiel staring a little confused at my display cabinet, and hearing Sam and Dean getting up too.
“Er,” I gave a nervous smile. “It's not a real one. Obviously.”
“Holy shit.” Dean said as he stepped in. “Why do you have so much stuff?”
My cheeks went red and I quickly turned back to my computer in an attempt to ignore the fact that they were there. “I'm a collector.”
“Have you really read all those books?” Sam asked.
“I wish. I tend to focus more on writing and getting through the day than actually reading lately.” My cheeks burned more, having not meant to say that.
“So why do you own so many?” Dean asked.
“Because she's a collector Dean,” Castiel answered for me. “It makes her feel better too.”
I cleared my throat a little and Castiel blushed. “Sorry, I didn't mean-”
“It's not wrong.” I mumbled, putting my glasses on. “But, you know, when you like something, you just buy stuff. Last I heard Dean, you collected weapons.”
But Dean was suddenly distracted, and it wasn't until he groaned that I turned back around, to find him holding two boxes.
“Oh,” I didn't know whether to laugh or groan. “Um, well, in all fairness, I do like the show.”
“But these?” Dean holds up the two pop vinyls of him and Sam. “I mean, at least buy something realistic.”
Sam started laughing. “Come on Dean, they're cute.”
“No Sam, they're abominations.” Dean said. “I mean come on, look at them all!”
I did have more than a few, including two complete collections on top of the cabinet.
“And there Emma's.” Sam said. “So shut up and put them down.”
Dean grumbles and goes to put them down before he frowns. “What? Don't have one of Cas?”
There was no missing the embarrassment on my face as I turned back to my desk, clearing my throat. “Course I do, it's just...away, at the moment.” It was a blatant lie, but currently better than trying to explain it. “I’ve been meaning to put them away too, but haven’t got around to it.”
“Why do you have them away?” Castiel asked. “I thought the point was to display them?”
“It is, but as you can see I’m a little short of room.” I said, nodding at the shelf next to me, which was also very full. “There’s only so many things I can display at one time.”
“Right, still totally not weird.” Dean mumbles.
“It’s not like I knew this stuff was real Dean.” I said, trying to concentrate on the words in front of me. “Now go watch a movie or something, this is very distracting.”
“We need to make sure that you don’t touch anything.” Dean said and before I could say anything, he went and sat down on my bed, making himself comfortable.
I huff. “I won’t, I’ve got better self-preservation than that.”
“Right-” Dean glances over and then freezes, before pulling a face and reaching over behind my laptop. “Put away huh?” He pulls out the little Castiel pop vinyl, black wings and all. “Is there a reason why it’s behind-” He pauses again, and looked even less impressed as he reaches for the other one that sits with Castiel. “Crowley? Really?”
My face burned and I purposefully avoided his gaze. “What?”
“Cas and Crowley sit on your desk?” Dean asked incredulously as Castiel takes the small version of himself and looks at it.
“So?” I asked irritably.
“Why? No offense to Cas, but Crowley?”
“Last I checked I was allowed to have favourite characters.” I mumbled.
“Crowley?” Dean asked in disbelief.
“You got to have your good characters with your bad ones.” I shrug it off.
Dean stares at me as if I’ve gone mad before shaking his head in amazement. “What next, a Lucifer one?”
“They haven’t made one yet,” I mumbled and then caught Dean’s look. “But no, he wouldn’t sit on my desk, it’s more-” I realised I didn’t really want to say it, quickly shutting my mouth.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Seriously, if you don’t give me a good answer I’m going to throw them out the window.”
Quicker than Dean thought I would be, I snatched the Crowley pop from his hand, making him raise an eyebrow. “It’s a writing thing, okay? Certain things I keep in sight to remind of points I need in writing.”
“What could-“
“Light and dark.” Castiel said and I grumbled a little under my breath as I put Crowley back on my desk.
“Seriously?”
“It’s more complicated than that, but essentially.” I growled. “It’s a reminder that characters, and I guess in this case, people, are much more complicated than black and white, no matter what side they appear to be on.” I gave Dean a long look. “You and Sam are equally good examples, but as I said, favourite characters.”
“So Crowley and Cas?”
I shrug, leaving it at that. “Now, are you going to let me read in peace?”
“Dean.” Sam warned as Dean went to keep arguing.
“Fine, we'll go watch TV or something.” He mumbled and got up, quickly leaving, my shoulders relaxing a little.
Castiel puts his figure back on my table. “I think it's cute.” He said quietly, and I felt my face burn, but Castiel quickly left, leaving me to stifle nervous giggles.
It was a little while later that Dean got my attention again. “Your Netflix sucks!”
“Tell me something I don't know!” I yelled back. “It's not like there's not hundreds of other movies on the shelves.”
“How the hell do you have so many?”
“Dad and I like movies.”
“But this many?”
I roll my eyes and keep reading, that was until the eventual start of a movie got my attention.
I listened, recognising the music, and frowning, I got up and stared at them, leaning against my doorway.
“Really? All the selections and you pick an apocalyptic movie?”
“How do you know what we're watching?” Dean asked.
“Because Legion happens to be one of my favourite movies,” I said. “Not to mention, I'm damned good at recognising movies when I hear them, music or quotes.”
Dean looked disbelieving but Sam smiled. “It was something we hadn't seen, and, well, it tends to be amusing for us to pick apart apocalyptic films.”
“Fair enough.” I said and then give a little concerned glance at Castiel. “Just don't take the angels to heart Cas.”
Castiel was going to ask a question when Dean interrupted.
“What we have here, is a failure to communicate.”
We all stared at Dean, Castiel and Sam looking confused.
“Dean, Emma's been-“
“It's okay Cas,” I raised my eyebrow at Dean. “It's Cool Hand Luke, Dad loves that movie, so you are going to have to try harder than that.”
“I could do this all night.”
Rolling my eyes, I go back to my room. “Enjoy the movie guys.”
Headphones went in quickly, because I knew the movie would distract me otherwise. Luckily, I tended to work better under pressure, so I sat pretty focused on what I was doing.
The story was interesting, there was no doubt about it, but there was also something about it that I couldn't quite put my finger on and it was bothering me.
I was so engrossed that I almost missed the message from my parents.
“Shit.” I scrambled to my feet and hurried to the lounge room. “You guys gotta go.”
I found all three of them staring at the screen.
“It's almost finished.” Dean waved his hand.
“Yeah and I'd rather not have to explain to my parents why there are three strange men in my house.” I said. “Come on.”
But they didn't move and I just stared at them.
“Guys!” But they sat, just watching and I stared at them a little desperately.
“Okay, it's finished.” Dean said, standing to stretch. “It was weird, but not half bad.”
“I question their interpretation of angels.” Castiel said, frowning. “I mean, we did try and bring on the apocalypse but-“
“Discuss later!” I hurried to the door. “Go!”
“But-“
“Please.” I practically begged. “I can handle it, I'll message if anything goes wrong, but I need you to go.”
I practically had to push them out the door, and not a moment too soon as I heard the lift open.
Cursing, I hurried to the lounge and started cleaning up the pizza boxes as my parents walked in, sharing an odd look back at the lift.
Luckily, they didn't say anything.
I didn't end up sleeping much that night, between trying to read and texts from Dean with quotes, and then Sam apologising and trying to steal Dean's phone, there wasn't much room for sleeping.
I was glad when I didn't have much to do in the morning, my parents having already planned a day together, so they were out by the time I got out of bed.
I was quick to put music on to keep me awake, and even quicker to put the kettle on for tea.
“Hope that's for two love.”
I screamed, jumping around to come face to face with Crowley.
“Holy fuck.” I grabbed the bench as I breathed hard. “What the fuck Crowley?”
He didn't bothered hiding his smirk. “Well, the boys said you'd know who I was, but they didn't mention that colourful language.”
“Oh, I haven't even started yet mate.” I said darkly. “You can't just barge in on someone like that!”
“I didn't-” He stopped at my look and rolled his eyes. “My apologies. It was not my intention.”
“Right.” I grumbled, turning back to the kettle and pulling out another cup. “I thought Sam and Dean had banned you from being here?”
Crowley watched with a raised eyebrow as I made the tea. “Well, seeing as they don't get many trips overseas, I figured I'd send them on a little holiday.”
I frowned and handed him his tea. “A holiday?”
“I figured they'd like Alice Springs.” He said amused and then looked at the mug in his hand. “Can I ask how you knew how I took my tea?”
“Because I watch the show.” I said, walking past him and settling down onto a lounge, my face burning. “And it's also how I take it.”
My phone ringing interrupted whatever Crowley was about to say. “Dean-”
“Tell that son of a bitch to come and get us.”
I glanced at Crowley, who was grinning. “Yeah, like he's going to listen to me.”
“Emma, we are frying out in the damned desert. Tell him to come and get us.”
“You’re lucky it’s not summer.” I said, causing Dean to curse loudly.
Crowley holds his hand out for the phone and, being much too tired to be yelled at, I passed it over.
“Not having fun Squirrel?” Crowley asked, grinning.
I could hear Dean yelling, and I quickly hid my grin my drinking my tea.
Crowley tutted. “Now, that's no way to treat the only one that can get you here and get you home. I simply want to talk to her.”
More yelling from Dean.
Crowley rolled his eyes. “Do you really think I'm that idiotic? That I'm going to ask the one helping us to sell her soul? I was simply curious about what you boys said last night-” I choked a little on my tea. “-and knew that you morons wouldn't let me sate it.”
I shifted a little nervously as Crowley continued to talk to Dean, even as Dean continued to yell, and eventually, Crowley rolled his eyes and hung up before turning off my phone and handing it back.
“Honestly, anyone would think they don’t appreciate a little break.” He grins at me and I gave a nervous smile.
“In all fairness, the Northern Territory does get damned hot.” I said. “And, I mean, you did leave them in actual Alice Springs right? Not literally in the desert?”
His smile wasn’t reassuring. “They’re tough. They’ll manage.”
“Uh huh,” I nodded. “And what about when we need to deal the problem of this story?”
“Have you finished it?”
“No.”
“Then we have plenty of time.”
“To do what?” I could feel my face burning, but I did my best to ignore it. “I’m hardly in much of a mood for someone that scared the absolute crap out of me without evening introducing himself first.”
Crowley stared at me for a long moment, so much so that I shifted a little uncomfortably under his gaze.
I was shocked when he leant forward and held out his hand. “I’m Crowley.”
I snorted with laughter before breaking out into giggles, unable to help it, the situation feeling ridiculous, but I took his hand. “Emma.”
Crowley shook but then swiftly kissed the back of my hand, smirking as I blushed. “Pleased to meet you dear. Glad to have someone useful helping us for once.”
I cleared my throat a little. “Don’t thank me yet, I haven’t solved the problem. Although…” The thought had been occurring to me throughout the morning, but I wasn’t ready to say anything yet. “I think I’m getting there.”
“I’m sure you’re doing amazing love,” Crowley said, taking a drink of tea. “Now, why don’t you get into something more comfortable and I treat you breakfast?”
“More-” I froze, mortified as I realised that I was still in my pyjamas. “Fuck. Um, e-excuse me for a minute.”
I practically bolted to my room, slamming the door shut and cursing myself under my breath, and maybe him a few times too for just turning up in my apartment.
Dressed properly, I took a deep breath and left my room, finding Crowley standing at the book shelf, flicking through a book.
“Comfortable?” I asked, grabbing my bag and slipping my tablet inside. I knew that they wouldn’t like it, but I’d saved the file to my online drive, knowing that it was going to be easier to read out (away from possible parental intrusion) than it was here.
Crowley raised an eyebrow. “Your books on mythology are a little outdated.”
“They’re textbooks, of course they are.” I grabbed my shoes and slipped them on. “It’s not like anyway, I mean, outside of you guys, really actually know about it.”
“So why collect books if you know the information isn’t accurate?” He asked, placing it back on the shelf, with difficulty.
“It’s not like I didn’t know it wasn’t accurate,” I argued. “Up until yesterday anyway. I use them mostly for inspiration.” I turned and gave a small squeak as I found him directly behind me. “Stop doing that!”
He grinned. “But it’s amusing.”
“It’s really not!”
Crowley just continued to smile. “Ready?”
Not really sure if this was a wise idea, I nodded, although still clearly annoyed and embarrassed.
Breakfast with Crowley was odd to say the least, I mean, the sheer notion that he and the others were real was wild enough, but actually sitting with them, that was something else entirely.
Making small talk, I learnt he really was just curious, despite not missing any opportunity to make some sort of comment that would guarantee a reaction from me, and I didn’t know whether to be annoyed that it affected me so easily, or amused that he seemed to be enjoying it so much.
Eventually, he ducked away to take a phone call and I took the opportunity to pull out my tablet, continuing where I left off the night before, slipping my glasses on.
The few pages I read before Crowley returned had me frowning at the words on the screen.
“Problem love?” He asked, sitting back down.
“I…think I know what we’re dealing with.” I said slowly. “But you’re not going to like the theory that goes with it. Give me a minute to finish it.”
I could feel his eyes on me as I kept reading, more and more solidifying my idea and making me chew my lip a little, fingers tapping the table.
I nod, taking my glasses off and rubbing my eyes. “Yeah…this is…different.”
“Care to elaborate?” He asked.
“Yeah, but with the others here, I’d rather only answer one round of questions.” I said, looking up and seeing he looked a little annoyed, a small smile tugging at my lips. “Come on Crowley, you can’t keep them out there forever, you’d miss them too much.”
“I would do no such thing.” He said, flicking through the contacts on his phone before he found Dean’s number.
Dean’s voice was loud and clear on the other end, making Crowley roll his eyes before finally cutting him off. “For your information I was going to come and get you. Emma thinks she’s figured it out.”
“Well then come and get us.” Dean growled.
“I would if you’d tell me where you were.”
Dean’s yelling made me shake my head in amusement. “He really doesn’t like you does he?”
Crowley grins before vanishing, leaving me alone in the café and me looking around to make sure that no one had noticed. Luckily, it was actually quiet and we had the area to ourselves.
I wasn’t overly sure how to feel about not noticing that before.
I jumped when the four of them appeared again, Dean looking furious, which only got worse when I burst into laughter.
All three men were bright red and looking nothing short of uncomfortable.
“Welcome to Australia.” I continued to laugh. “I’m sorry for laughing but god, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that completely just fries in the sun. You guys are going to be feeling that for a while.”
“I’m feeling it now.” Dean growls, glaring at Crowley. “You’re just lucky we need you to get home.”
Crowley was grinning. “What? Didn’t enjoy your trip?”
“Crowley, anything could’ve happened, what were you thinking?” Sam asked, pouring himself a glass of water and quickly downing it. “Emma could’ve-”
“Potentially solved the issue?” I asked, cutting Sam off. “I don’t think I could’ve dealt with you guys this morning if I tried, that’s how much sleep I had, and as much as sending you to Alice Springs-” I had to hide my grin. “-wasn’t the best idea, I’m glad he did, just for a little reprieve.”
“I’m not going to be able to move in a few hours.” Dean growled. “And you find this funny?”
I shrugged and looked at Castiel, who was looking curiously as his burnt hands. “Care to help them out?”
Castiel looked up, his eyes curious. “Sorry, I just don’t think I’ve felt my vessel this burnt before.”
“Doesn’t surprise me,” I smiled. “The Australian sun is good for that.” I nodded at Crowley. “I don’t blame him for not staying out there, he would’ve ended up a lot worse.”
Castiel gives a small frown. “But it is the same sun?”
I chuckled, Crowley rolling his eyes. “Yeah, but we have some very different circumstances, hole in the ozone and all that, so we burn more. Sunscreen is pretty given in a lot of parts, especially for fair skin.”
“Yeah, great, doesn’t solve the damned problem now does it?” Dean growled. “Can you heal this Cas?”
Castiel nodded, the colour quickly dying off his cheeks before he helped Sam and Dean, who both looked relieved.
“Just spoiling the fun feathers.” Crowley said, taking his seat opposite me again. “So now we’re a happy family again, shall we sort this out?”
“After I get some damned food.” Dean stomps off and I shake my head after him.
“I know I’d be annoyed too, but I really doubt comfort eating is going to help.” I tapped the screen of my tablet. “And he’s going to like this even less.”
Sam sunk into the chair next to me, Castiel following after Dean. “Think you got it?”
“I’ve got a pretty good idea.” I nodded.
Dean and Castiel brought up more food and drink, Castiel passing me a chocolate milkshake, something that made me smile as he’d clearly seen the empty one on the table in front of me. I didn’t miss Crowley’s slightly annoyed look, but didn’t say anything.
“Alright, shoot.” Dean said, sitting down hard and digging automatically into his burger.
“Well, did all of you read this?” I asked and they nod. “What did you think it was?”
“Some sci-fi crap.” Dean said. “That’s very broken in the way it’s told.”
“Sci-fi isn’t crap.” I said little indignantly. “I’ve got a couple of my own sci-fi works in progress. It can be complex when done right and that’s exactly what this is.”
“It came across as nothing but action.” Sam said, looking confused. “I mean, it’s good and all, but hardly complicated.”
“You clearly lack imagination,” I said through a small smile. “Indeed, it has action, but it also has a lot more.” I scrolled through the story a little. “Did you guys not see the relationship between Mia and Val?”
“What relationship?” Dean asked. “They were friends.”
But I shook my head. “No, they were lovers.”
Dean choked a little on his food. “What?”
“This story, through all the sci-fi, the action and all the other stuff that happens, is a love story.” I couldn’t help but smile at Dean’s slightly disgusted expression. “They thought they lost each other when the planet was taken over, when they were both taken away by the aliens and forced into very different lifestyles, and were getting to the stage of moving on when they found each other again, but on opposite sides. It’s written as friendship because why must a couple always appear as couple? Aren’t people technically more than that?”
“Makes sense.” Crowley said. “But how does it end? The way it is at the moment makes very little sense.”
“Well, it’s incomplete, I know that much.” I said. “I have a feeling whoever wrote this was planning to come back to edit it and add in more. Right now, it’s very…arty. Essentially, Mia dies.”
“What?” All four of them asked, staring at me and I nod.
“It’s all here, the imagery gives it away.” I read over the final few sentences again. “And it’s implied that Val accidently kills her, which is where I think what we’re dealing with comes in.”
“How can you possibly work that out too?” Dean asked, sounding a little annoyed. “I mean, we do this every day and-”
“You came to me.” I finished bluntly. “And, as you’ve said multiple times, I do watch the show.” Dean shot me a look. “It’s…odd, but I feel like it’s right.”
“What is it?” Castiel asked. “It’s got to be bound to the story somehow.”
I nod. “It helped write the story. You’re dealing with a muse here.”
This time, Dean did choke, Sam having to hit him on the back several times before he could talk. “What?!”
“It sounds strange, I know, but, well…” I hesitated.
“Go on love,” Crowley said. “You’re the only that can explain it.”
I licked my lips nervously. “Well, I think that this story is actually their story. The beginning is a little disjointed, clear that the writer was just getting going with no clear direction, but when Val came into the story, it started to become clearer, more complicated. There were less missing chunks. The more I thought about, a part from a demon, the only other thing that made sense was that somehow the writer got their hands on muse. Like Val, the muse was trapped, but still helplessly entwined with Mia and her story, their actions moving it forward until that finale. Val, trapped, kills Mia, without meaning too, thus remaining trapped and desperately missing the only one that can free them.”
They all stared at me, making me grin a little nervously. “It makes sense to me.”
“Who’s to say it’s not some demon deal?” Dean asked, looking frustratingly confused.
“Don’t you’d think I’d know?” Crowley asked.
“Oh, because it’s so out of the ordinary for you to withhold information.” Dean said, rolling his eyes. “Come on Crowley, is it-”
“Last I checked, demons didn’t let themselves get trapped in a story.” I said, cutting him off. “I mean, it could be ghost too, but judging by the way the story improved, I’m still voting for a muse.”
“Muses usually are after their victims though.” Sam said. “Not fall in love with them.”
“Again, you guys lack imagination.” I took a long drink for a moment. “Nowhere does it say that monsters can’t fall in love, bound to their nature, certainly, for the most part, but not incapable of feeling things.”
“How can free it?” Castiel asked after a moment of silence, where there were a few glances at Crowley from the other three, making him shoot them dark glares. “That’s clearly what it wants right?”
I shrugged. “Beats me. It’s possible that it wants freedom, but it’s also possible that it wants to see Mia again.”
“Free it? How do we kill it?” Dean asked. “If this thing is trapped, shouldn’t we just find a way of digitally, I don’t know, erasing the thing?”
“Yeah, good luck with that.” I muttered.
“I mean, if it’s hurting, it’d be the right thing to do?” Sam reasoned. “It wouldn’t be fair to leave it trapped like that.”
“I really doubt it’s going to be simple Moose,” Crowley said. “We’re talking about possibly more than a few files here, spread across possibly a lot of sources, including the internet. If you still want to kill it, freeing it is going to be the best way first.”
The four of them continued talking, pretty much going round in circles while I tried something else.
Hello?
…who is this?
My name’s Emma. I’m trying to help.
I don’t need help. Leave me alone before I kill you too.
It’s Val right?
There was a long pause.
Yes.
And Mia…Mia was the author?
Again, a pause.
Yes.
You killed her.
I did not want to, the story was unfinished, shall never be finished, but something went wrong.
What?
I don’t know.
How did she get you there?
A…spell. I think. It was a long time ago now. Maybe it went wrong.
Can we break it? Would that free you?
I do not know. I think we would need Mia.
Where is she?
Dead.
Beyond that.
I do not know. Stop talking to me. I do not wish to talk. You are not worthy to be talking to me.
The air around me changed and I swallowed, glancing up. “Aw crap.”
This got their attention. “What?”
Val, please, I only want to-
The tablet was ripped away from me. “What are you doing?!”
“Trying to solve the problem.” I shouted back at Dean, trying to grab it back, but missing.
“We told you writing in this thing would get you killed!” He said angrily. “And-holy shit you’re talking to it?”
I didn’t get a chance to answer, feeling the air become thicker and chill to pass across my skin, making me stand on guard, looking around.
A woman appeared in front of me, making me take a step back into the table, Castiel the first to step in front of me as she scowled, her face contorting in fury, Sam and Dean by side, guns drawn.
“Well, I guess she was right about the muse.” Crowley said, watching the woman, moving around slightly, making the woman hiss. “Definitely a new one for the books.”
“Shut up Crowley.” Sam and Dean said together.
“Look lady,” Dean continued. “Emma was only trying to help, no need to get antsy here.”
“I don’t need help.” She screeched and launched forward, Sam and Dean being sent crashing off and Castiel holding her back, but I could tell even he wouldn’t be able to hold it long.
“We can find Mia!” I said loudly. “We can let you guys meet again.”
Castiel was flung aside and I didn’t have time to scream as her fingers wrapped around my throat and her face pressed close to mind.
“How?” She hissed.
“Me.” Crowley said and with a small wave of his hand, she was flung off me and I drew in deep breathes, my hand on my throat, fighting down the fear that was wanting to take over. “Now, be a good little muse and keep your hands to yourself.”
She hissed as the boys get back to their feet, her eyes flickering between me and Crowley. “You’re telling me that Mia went to Hell?”
“That’s what I can find out.” He said lightly. “But only if you play nice.”
Castiel, Sam and Dean were quickly back by my side, making sure they were once again in the way between me and the muse.
“Then I suggest you hurry up,” The muse growled. “Otherwise, she’s mine too.”
Crowley grinned and disappeared.
“Shit.” Dean cursed. “Now what do we do?”
“Trust him.” I said.
“What?”
“You have no other choice, so trust him dammit.” I kept my eyes on her. “This needs to work.”
“Why would you risk yourself like this?” Sam asked.
“I thought she’d be reasonable.” I mumbled. “Trust me, this result was not intended.”
The air was tense and my eyes kept glancing at the door, wondering why no one had come running through to see what the commotion was about.
The muse stepped forward, making us all tense. “Time’s running out.”
“Give him time.” Castiel said. “It’s not exactly easy to-”
“Silence.” She spat. “Because I will have what is mine either way.”
I felt like throwing up, biting my tongue hard to keep myself in check.
“Then maybe this will help.” We all looked over, finding Castiel standing there, another woman standing next to him looking a little confused until her eyes landed on Val.
“Valory?” Her voice was quiet and the muse instantly backed down, her gaze moving away guiltily.
“Mia…”
Mia took several steps forward towards her but Valory shied away. “Val, I knew that our time was limited, you do not need to blame yourself.”
“I should’ve been in control.” Val mumbled. “I’m sorry.”
“And I forgive you.” Mia looked around at all of us, noting the tension, before she saw the tablet on table where Dean had left it. “Are you still tied to it?”
“The spell was binding Mia, I cannot move.” Val finally looks up and meets her eyes. “I miss you.”
“And I you,” Mia’s smile was kind. “But you need to move on, be free from that. You are no longer bound.”
Valory drew in a deep breath, her eyes shining. “But-”
“It’s not forever, remember?” Mia beams and holds out her hand, one that Val takes and for a moment the two just look at each other before Val vanishes, Mia’s hand dropping. “Good girl.”
“Liked playing with fire a little too much dear?” Crowley asked, looking amused, his gaze flicking to me for a moment. “Must be writer’s thing.”
Mia shrugs. “I was struggling, but it seemed to work out in the end, even if I didn’t complete it, I found more than I ever thought I would.”
“It’s good writing.” I piped up, still boxed in by Sam, Dean and Castiel. “Wish I could’ve seen more from you.”
Mia smiles. “Well, you know how it goes, sometimes things just don’t seem to work out.”
I nod before Crowley steps forward again. “Sorry to intrude, but I can’t keep you out here too long.”
“I know. Thank you.” She nods in thanks to him as he snaps his fingers, Mia disappearing.
I relaxed, leaning heavily back against the table with a shaky laugh. “Well, that worked.”
“That was almost suicide.” Dean rounded on me. “What were you thinking?”
“Trying to help.” I said tiredly. “And if it’s any consolation, I’ve been crapping my pants the whole time. You guys might be used to that excitement, but that’s definitely a new one for me.”
“Shall we finish this conversation elsewhere?” Crowley asked. “I think we’ve made enough of a mess here.”
With another snap, we found ourselves back in my apartment and I was quick to sink heavily into a chair, noting a shake in my hands.
Sam was the first to move, grabbing a glass and pouring some whiskey into it from my countertop before bringing it over.
“I normally don’t drink it straight,” I said, downing it one go, cringing. “But I think for that I’ll make an exception.”
Sam smiled. “Well, at least we know you’re okay.”
Dean still didn’t look impressed but he sighed. “Yeah, you’re okay. Thanks for…sorting it out for us.”
“I’ll just pretend you’re not pissed at me.” I said through a smile. “Thanks for stepping in for me, all of you.”
“We got you into this, we’re not just going to leave you to deal with it.” Castiel said and then pressed his hand to forehead, making me blink before blushing as I feel the bruising disappear. “Is that better?”
I nod mutely, in awe.
“Well, this was all exciting, but I do believe we’ve done what we came here for.” Crowley said. “I’m sure you boys are keen to get home.”
“Very.” Dean grunts. “That way I can go back to hating you and pretending that this didn’t happen.”
“Charming.” Crowley said. “And here I was thinking that her words meant something to you Squirrel.”
Dean scowls and goes and pours himself his own drink, making me smile. “You guys are welcome back anytime.”
Sam and Castiel return the smile, Crowley shrugging a little nonchalantly, although I didn’t miss his smirk, Dean the only one looking a little unimpressed.
“Maybe one day kid, as long you don’t throw yourself in like that.” He growled.
“No promises.” I said. “I mean, I will be viewing things a little differently now.”
Dean just rolls his eyes.
They waited till I was settled before they actually planned to leave, which seemed too short a time. Despite it all, I quickly gave Sam and Dean a hug.
“You guys stay out of trouble,” I said, smiling at them. “And please don’t be too hard on Cas and Crowley, you guys need each other.”
Dean grumbles, mumbling a goodbye before standing near the door, Sam laughing, giving a much warmer goodbye and joining him.
Castiel looked a little awkward. “Emma…I thought you’d like this.”
My eyebrows raised in shock as he passed me an angel a blade, a real one, and I stared at it, the weight odd in my hands. “Cas-”
“You’re aware of our world now, it’ll be safer.” He said quickly, trying to look convinced of what he was saying, nodding as he did so and it made me smile widely.
“Thank you Cas.” I said and then hugged him too.
Crowley rolled his eyes and Castiel stepped away, not hiding his grin. “Honestly, you lot are so boring.”
Without another word, he stepped forward, my eyes going wide in shock as he suddenly kissed me, making me squeak, even as my eyes shut and lips followed his.
It was over way too quickly and I stood there in numb shock, not even really noting Crowley’s smirk as the three others scowled at him.
“Seriously Crowley, you can’t just kiss someone without permission.”
“She doesn’t seem to mind.”
I knew my face was burning but I had no other reaction than just staring at them.
Dean huffed and rolled his eyes, pointing at the blade in my hand. “Just remember Emma, that blade works on demons too.”
Crowley chuckled and in a blink, they were gone.
I moved to my room, sitting numbly on my bed, the angel blade in my hand, my fingers running absently over it, my mind racing to catch up with everything that had happened in just under two days, not entirely sure what I was going to do with myself after all this.
I glanced over at my laptop on my desk and a smile crept onto my lips. Standing, I swapped the two angel blades over, burying the other under my bed before sitting down in my chair and opening my laptop.
Once ready, I knew there was only thing that I could do.
I started to write.
Had a really fun night with friends playing Archery Tag! So much fun would highly recommend :)
