Medical question : What would be a good setup for range/vehicle and then a good setup for IFAK? Do you have a recommended list, or a pre-built setup?
Well it depends a little bit on how much training you have and/or in some cases what your licensed to do. I know in some states, being a licensed EMT for example, you can only operate under what your scope of practice even off duty. Regardless, you should always do only what you are trained and qualified to do medically even if someone’s life is in jeopardy. Call 911 or get Doc to come sort things.
For a car or more general based kit I would have all the boo boo stuff, a TQ, pressure bandaging of some kind, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, quick clot, gauze, chest seal of some kind, tape, shears, gloves, sharpie, maybe some ibuprofen or benedryl, maybe some hydrogen peroxide, or even an emergency blanket if you have the space. If you know how to use them, a nasopharyngl airway with lube, a pocket mask, or even a bag-valve mask may be included. I find it funny when I see these guys thinking they’re going to perform chest decompression or a surgical cricothyrotomy without that much training. I mean yes, in most cases you’re going to be covered under the Good Samaritan Law if you decide to help, but that doesn’t mean you should just try out shit you’re really not qualified to do. I also recommend keeping a fire extinguisher in your car that is rated for class A,B, and D fires.
For and IFAK, pressure bandaging, quick clot, TQ, gauze, gloves, tape, antiseptic wipes, chest seal of some kind, and a sharpie are good things to have imo. Obviously, an IFAK on any piece of kit that is purposed for combat is usually based around controlling hemorrhaging.. At the end of the day if you experience any significant trauma of any kind you need a surgeon or you’re probably going to die. The goal is to keep you alive long enough to get there.
I am by no means the end all be all in medical knowledge. But, if you buy stuff and carry it, make sure you know how to use it.
