He wasn’t sure what he had been expecting when he made that comment. He knew he was half hoping she would hear, but for some reason hadn’t thought she would turn around, or acknowledge it in any way. He really shouldn’t have been surprised but there he stood stunned into silence when she had whipped around and he saw her face and processed her, well rant. He only regained his composure towards the end of her spiel and his jaw shut with a click as he let his shock morph into anger. He knew she was right for the most part but he couldn’t ever let things lie.
“I don’t care who you hang out with, or when, or where. I did mention the plans at least once.” He was sure of it. “I don’t need to be ‘kept happy’,” he should stop and leave it at that and let her go, he thought, even as his tone became scathing. “You can take all the time you need” He needed to stop, “You don't have to be afraid of canceling plans or hanging out with anyone on my behalf as there isn’t anything more here. Friendship? More than friends? Don’t bother wasting your time.” His tone was practically dripping with scorn by the end.
He was already turning away before he uttered the last word, knowing he hit the last nail in the coffin on this one. The urge to turn around and apologise was growing as his anger started to fade, that little bout having taken a lot of it out of him. But his pride and stubbornness were stronger. The only sign of his struggle was his trembling hands, clenched into fists in a slightly successful bid to hide them, and his hesitation as he started to move off, causing him to stumble lightly but didn’t deter him from continuing to move away. He figured leaving would also lessen the chance of saying something worse. If there was anything worse than completely ruining any semblance of friendliness between them.
