Read all of slam dunk in like 2-3 days and watched the movie, got attached to Ryota & Ayako only to find out there is like almost no fan content. Most of the fics I have read I had to translate from Chinese/Mandarin. Which would be fine if google actually translated it correctly. I also got here late so everyone is gone except for like 2 janitors and a hand full of dust bunnies.😭

Just for fun, here's an AyaRyo (+Alive!Sota, background Mitsugure) rock band AU//

Main time setting: mid to late 90s (band forms in 1994)

Band Name: ?? (TBD I guess, feel free to leave any suggestions~)

Band Sound: rock/punk rock/ ska-punk (In my head I picture something like No Doubt meets The Boom (a jrock band))

Band Members (age when band formed // age when band really takes off and becomes popular):

Miyagi Sota (20 // ~24 )

guitar and occasional backing vocals

played in a punk band in high school, and occasionally with other groups, but found that he did want to take this path seriously so he decided to form a group with his brother

does some song writing for the group early on, but then let's Ayako and Ryota take the lead on that later on

Miyagi Ryota (17 // ~21)

bass

tried playing with other groups in jr high and high school but didn't end up staying with them for various reasons, so thisis the first one he's really committed to

also plays some piano and does a lot of song writing for the group

he can also sing well but is shy about singing in front of others and doesn't like to sing for the band because he thinks his voice doesn't match the band's sound (which Ayako thinks is a shame)

regarding his crush on Ayako it was definitely love at first sight for him, but for the sake of the band he does his best to keep his feelings at bay (to varying degrees of success)

Ayako (17 // ~21)

lead vocals

started out by singing pop covers and was initially trying for a solo singing career

one night Sota and Ryota saw her perform and Sota boldly tried to recruit her

she turned them down at first but later on changed her mind

her one condition for joining was being able to have a strong hand in the writing process, she and Ryota end up working closely with each other on that end

Mitsui (18 // ~22)

drums

showed up for an audition that Ayako and Sota set up

formerly part of the metal band scene in high school and carried a reputation for getting into trouble/fight a lot at and outside different venues, which is the reason Ryota was adamantly against him joining at first despite him being very talented and having a great audition

used to have long hair but then cut it to show he was serious about changing his image for the band

Other characters (age when band really takes off and becomes popular)

Miyagi Anna (~19)

art school student

designs the band merch and occasionally helps to manage the merch table

doesn't play an instrument (wasn't super into it as a kid)

Yasuda "Yasu" Yasuhiro (~21)

trumpet player for the band

music major (in a graduate program)-when the band needs other horn players he brings along people in his program that he knows (Shiozaki, Kakuta, Iishi, etc)

he also went to the same university as Kogure for undergrad and they became friends

best friends with Ryota since jr high

Yasuda Mayumi (~23)

Yasu's older sister (just one of his other siblings)

law school student

met the band and Sota through Yasu (goes to check up on him during when the band was starting out)

becomes friendly with Sota since they're close in age

Sota develops a crush on her but thinks she's totally out of his league since she's super cool and smart

She likes him too but doesn't think he would ever be into her like that (it's a slow burn between them)

Kogure (~22)

majored in theater design, is working as a set designer with a theater company

by coincidence he and Mitsui went to the same high school, but didn't really interact with each other back then. However, one evening in high school when Kogure was out with his friends he runs into a then drunk Mitsui fighting with one of his band members on the street. After Mitsui gets knocked out from that fight and other people leave Kogure goes to help him up and get into a taxi home (since he recognized him as someone from his school). It just so happened that it was after this fight that Mitsui decides it's time to leave his band, but he doesn't remember Kogure helping him back then.

later when he goes with some university friends, this time to just go watch local bands, he sees Mitsui again with this new band, and through Yasu gets connected with Mitsui directly

He and Mitsui become good friends and get closer...and they're in "will-they-won't-they" situation for a couple years until Mitsui confesses to Kogure and they get together

Background (Sota and Ryota)

When he was a young guy (~1970s-1980s) Miyagi's father was really into the rock music scene going on in Okinawa and was a skilled, self-taught guitar player. Outside of his usual day job he played locally in different bands, and when he married and had kids he taught both his sons guitar when they both turned ~8 years old

Sota was especially talented at picking up guitar and playing well early on, but Ryota also learned pretty quickly as well

Their father passed away when Sota was ~14 and Ryota was ~11 (a little later than in canon)

The Miyagi family moved to Kanagawa about a year later (when Sota started high school)-but for other reasons not really having to do with their dad passing (although it did partially contribute to them moving)

SLAM DUNK AU-Ayako and Miyagi role switch

So there's been fanart imagining if Ayako was the star point guard on a girls basketball team and if Ryota was the team manager.

Just for fun I wanted to write down my thoughts imagining this really fun AU!

(Wrote this on my side twt account initially so I'm just sharing it here since I liked it )

Ayako

Part of the starting line up of the Shohoku girls basketball team as the point guard, number 7!

Has been a really strong player since jr high, she was scouted to go play for schools with strong basketball programs but decided to go to Shohoku to get guidance from Anzai sensei (in this AU he coaches girls basketball instead of boys basketball)

Her super cool, outgoing and friendly personality in canon is carried through into this AU, so that plus her skill make a lot of the girls on the team admire and look up to her

It's understood that she will take on the captain role once she's a 3rd year player

She plans to continue playing basketball after high school, at least through university

Miyagi

Was a point guard in jr high, with a lot of natural talent and potential

However, he ultimately decided not to continue playing in high school-in canon he says that he was "contemplating" whether he should continue playing in high school despite playing in jr high. Technically we don't know how much weight was behind this statement but in this AU I imagine he ultimately decides not to continue (the reasons relating to his complicated feelings surrounding his brother passing)

Even though he decides not to continue, by chance he sees Ayako at the gym during girl's team practice and was so inspired by her and wanted to support her-so he decided to join as the team manager

Since he still tries to like act like a "cool guy" all the girls on the team love to tease him

However, since he has really sharp-strong basketball knowledge and becomes skilled in first aid/managing injuries all the girls really respect him as their team manager

In this AU he sometimes still has tussles with bullies and skipped class a lot during his first year, but after being told off by Ayako he does try to straighten out. During his second year two of the team's strongest players are at risk for failing their midterms-so he holds a cram session at his (family's) apartment and the girls are stunned to find out he's pretty smart and a good tutor (he's not on the honor roll or anything though because he still only does the bare minimum in most of his classes lol)

His best friend is still Yasuda, and like in canon they played basketball together in middle school. In this AU though Yasuda goes to a different high school and plays basketball there, but they live near each other so they hang out and/or call each other often. Yasuda and Ayako have met a couple of times.

Ayako and Miyagi's dynamic together

Carried through from canon: Ryota does proclaim his feelings for Ayako pretty much since day 1, but Ayako also turns him down (she wants to focus on basketball, but offers for them to be friends)

Carried through from canon: Ryota tries to get over her trying to be with other girls, only to get a string of rejections (he just gets exhausted and just gives up on this, and like in canon the other girls know that he's still not over Ayako)

In this AU Ryota has been the one to proclaim that Ayako is on the path to becoming the "number 1 point guard" in the prefecture, ever since their first year. This surprises Ayako since that's not necessarily how she sees herself nor is that a specific goal she set for herself, but it secretly makes her happy whenever he says it.

During that cram session Ayako is there too since she's on the honor roll, although she already knows how smart Ryota is. What does pleasantly surprise her though is how patient he is explaining things to the other players.

Ryota and Ayako do meet up occasionally on the Sundays to help Ayako practice, so Ayako does know how good Ryota is at basketball. She doesn't understand why he decided to quit playing when it's obvious that he loves it and is a great player

While he is a great listener to Ayako and things that she's thinking about, it takes a while for him to open up to her about himself.

In this AU their prior meeting in Piercing doesn't happen
