AZ rant
I have tried for over three years now to write a fantasy story. And being a novis, I try to look up tips and tricks on how to handle it. But the only things I always find are rules on what not to do. It's always "don't do that" "this has been overdone" "This is so cliche" "People are so tired of it". They always bring up the problems, and never give any solutions on how to handle it differently. And I'm thinking, if you take away everything (and I mean everything) cliche, and everything that has already been done. What are you left with? Well my final set is, you let your characters live their peaceful lives and nothing interesting ever happens. And thereby, there will be no story, and thereby no cliches.
This thinking really made me hit the wall. I tried and tried to come up with a story, where my characters were nothing special, and nothing special happened in their lives. And still make it in to an interesting and entertaining story for me to write. But nope, couldn't do it. Surprised? I don't think so.
But do you know what my final solution to this problem is? Screw it! Screw it all.
If I wanna write the most cliche story of all time, and embrace all the things that has been done to death. I will. I'm doing it for my own enjoyment. And if other people happen to like it, that's great. But if you don't, no one else will either. Be creative, do what you want to do, and embrace what you love. And don't let anyone tell you what you can, or can not, write about.
And that, is my rant of the day.
