MB-240 Is Retiring in Days — Here's What to Know Before It's Gone
As of now, you have until June 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM Central Daylight Time to take the certification exam for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service Functional Consultant (MB-240). If you are looking to take this certification, read on to find out what it entails, who it is intended for, and steps to take next.
What MB-240 Covers
To start with, the MB-240 exam is intended for those working as Dynamics 365 Field Service functional consultants. Functional consultants are responsible for implementing solutions that provide scheduling and allocation of resources in order to fulfill a customer's needs by optimally allocating resources based on skills, location, and availability; empowering frontend workers with the required tools to provide service to customers; and providing a service record of a customer's assets.
Further, the MB-240 exam assesses an individual's ability to complete hands-on administrative tasks rather than theoretical knowledge. The tasks which will be assessed on the exam will include: configuring the default administrative settings of the Field Service application; configuring resource and scheduling; configuring service agreements and booking; managing work orders, incident types, and bookings; managing customer assets; installing and configuring the Field Service mobile application; and enhancing Field Service according to customer requirements.
MB-240 is a certification for the Microsoft Certification field service technician. The test evaluates your skills in configuring field service applications, managing work orders & customer assets, scheduling & dispatching technicians, using the field service mobile app, managing inventory & purchasing with the built in inventory management system, plus implementing Microsoft Power Platform. The certification is offered in eight languages: English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Chinese (Simplified).
Why this is Important
This is not just another 'niche' certification. The work done in field service; supplying technicians; tracking customer assets; and managing service agreements is essential to all industries that provide utilities; manufacture products; or maintain large quantities of equipment. Additionally, this certification has real monetary value. Mid-level functional consultants who successfully complete the MB-240 and find a job that matches their skillset can make an average annual salary in the USA of $125,000.
What Replaces It
When MB-240 retires, the new service will not have a direct replacement. Microsoft has directed this audience to the new, broader Architectural-First AI Pathway which is anchored by the AB-100 Architectural Business Solutions Architect. This is a change in scope because the AB-100 is an Expert credential vs. an Associate Functional Consultant credential like the MB-240. The overall service will be more Architectural in nature, so if your primary responsibility is implementing Field Service solutions, then your curriculum will be considerably more comprehensive and Architectural than the MB-240 was.
What If You Already Have Credentials For Your Certification?
As far as your credentials are concerned, you're in great shape because all previously earned Certifications: Certification for the corresponding exam and Certification's renewal Exam will no longer be offered as of June 30, 2026, certifying that if you have earned a Certification, you will not need another.
Bottom Line
If you've passed the MB-240, the short version is: If you intend to pursue this area of expertise, you'll have missed the opportunity for furthering that goal before most Readers see this content. Depending on where you are currently regarding your future plans, you could decide between completing an AB-100 Certification with an expertise on AI architecture & design using all new technologies/directing your credentials/career path towards achieving becoming a Full-Field Service Consultant through what will now officially become the primary method to become a Certified Field Service Solution Expert -- Timeline TBD.
