Hat Creek Rim is often a place that thru-hikers reach during the middle of the blazing heat of summer. It has, unfortunately, become somewhat synonymous with hot, dry, exposed misery. Early and late season it can be glorious. When you are not worried about making miles you can appreciate the dramatic views to Lassen Peak to the south and distant Mt. Shasta to the north.
As you cross this volcanic landscape, it is an opportunity to imagine what it may have looked like in May, 1915, when B.F. Loomis took this photo. Read some 1st person accounts in “Lassen Peak: The Big Blowout” which in included in The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader: California.
